Position : Mess Manager
Department: Girls’ Hostel
Location: College Campus
Employment Type : Full-time

Job Summary
The Mess Manager will be responsible for the overall management and smooth operation of the girls’ hostel mess, ensuring that students receive hygienic, nutritious, timely, and good-quality meals. The role involves menu planning, food procurement, inventory management, staff supervision, hygiene and safety, cost control, and addressing student feedback.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the hostel mess and ensure uninterrupted meal services.
- Plan weekly/monthly menus in consultation with the Hostel Warden/Administration and consider students’ nutritional requirements and preferences.
- Ensure meals are prepared and served on time according to the hostel schedule.
- Monitor the quality, quantity, taste, freshness, and nutritional value of food served.
- Supervise cooks, kitchen helpers, servers, cleaning staff, and other mess personnel.
- Allocate duties and monitor staff attendance, discipline, cleanliness, and performance.
- Procure groceries, vegetables, fruits, dairy products, cooking essentials, and other supplies as per approved requirements.
- Maintain proper stock registers, purchase records, consumption records, and inventory levels.
- Check incoming supplies for quality, quantity, freshness, and expiry dates.
- Minimize food wastage and implement effective portion and inventory controls.
- Maintain proper kitchen and dining-hall hygiene in accordance with institutional standards.
- Ensure safe storage and handling of food, including appropriate refrigeration and dry-storage practices.
- Conduct regular checks of kitchen equipment, utensils, gas/electrical appliances, and other facilities.
- Coordinate with maintenance teams/vendors for timely repair and replacement of equipment.
- Collect and address student feedback regarding food quality, menu, cleanliness, and service.
- Coordinate with the Hostel Warden regarding complaints, special dietary requirements, festivals, events, and other hostel requirements.
- Maintain records related to mess expenditure, vendor bills, stock, wastage, and daily meal counts.
- Assist in budgeting and maintain expenditure within the approved budget.
- Ensure compliance with applicable food safety, hygiene, fire safety, and institutional regulations.
- Coordinate with vendors and negotiate rates, subject to college procurement policies.
- Handle special meals or arrangements for guests, hostel events, examinations, and college functions when required.
- Ensure proper cleaning and sanitization of the kitchen, dining area, utensils, and storage areas.
- Report shortages, quality issues, equipment problems, staff issues,
or other operational concerns promptly to the management.
Qualifications
- Graduate/Diploma in Hotel Management, Catering Technology, Hospitality Management, Food & Nutrition, or a related field preferred.
- Candidates with relevant experience in hostel, college, school, hospital, institutional, or large-scale catering operations may also be considered.
Experience
- 2–5 years of relevant experience in mess/canteen/hostel/institutional food-service management preferred.
- Experience in managing a high-volume kitchen and supervising food-service staff will be an advantage.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Good knowledge of food hygiene, sanitation, and safe food handling.
- Good understanding of menu planning and basic nutrition.
- Staff supervision and team-management skills.
- Ability to handle student concerns professionally and promptly.
- Basic computer skills for maintaining records and reports.
Working Conditions
- Full-time position requiring regular presence during breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner operations as applicable.
- May require flexible working hours during hostel events, inspections, examinations, and special occasions.
- The position involves regular supervision of kitchen, storage, and dining facilities.
Job Types: Full-time, Walk-In
Pay: ₹40,000.00 - ₹50,000.00 per month
