Job Type: Full-Time Contract
Work Mode: Remote
Role Overview
We are looking for a Senior CMS Developer with strong WordPress and PHP expertise to own and evolve a high-volume publishing platform end to end.
This is not a theme-customization role. You will build custom plugins, blocks, and editorial tools; design scalable content models and taxonomies; optimize WordPress for high traffic; manage major platform upgrades and content migrations; and maintain APIs that power mobile apps and decoupled front ends.
You will also work directly with editorial teams to understand their workflows and build tools that make publishing faster and more reliable.
Key Responsibilities
- Own the WordPress platform and its architecture end to end.
- Develop custom WordPress plugins, blocks, and editorial tooling from scratch.
- Design and maintain content models and taxonomies covering sections, cities, editions, authors, and different story formats.
- Optimize WordPress performance for high-traffic workloads.
- Implement and manage object caching, full-page caching, CDN purge-on-publish, and database/query optimization.
- Plan and execute the WordPress upgrade path from 6.9 through the 7.x releases, including Phase 3 collaboration changes.
- Execute large-scale content migrations and remappings while preserving content history, URLs, and SEO value.
- Build and maintain APIs for mobile applications and decoupled front ends.
- Harden the WordPress stack and maintain secure, up-to-date dependencies.
- Respond quickly to plugin vulnerabilities and production security issues.
- Work closely with editors and newsroom users to identify workflow issues and improve editorial tooling.
- Follow Git-based version control and CI-driven deployment practices.
Required Skills & Experience
- 5–8 years of professional PHP development experience, with significant production experience in WordPress.
- Strong experience building custom WordPress plugins from scratch.
- Experience designing WordPress content models using:
- Custom post types
- Custom taxonomies
- Term relationships
- Metadata
- Proven experience running WordPress at high traffic and implementing multiple caching layers.
- Strong knowledge of modern PHP 8.x, including:
- Typed code
- Composer
- PSR standards
- Automated testing
- Hands-on experience with the WordPress 6.9–7.x ecosystem, block editor, and Phase 3 collaboration work.
- Experience handling at least one large-scale content migration.
- Strong understanding of APIs and integrations for mobile or decoupled applications.
- Experience with Git, CI/CD, and production deployment workflows.
- Solid troubleshooting, performance optimization, and production support skills.
- Ability to join within 0–15 days.
This Role May Not Be a Fit If
- Your experience is primarily configuring existing WordPress plugins and themes.
- You have not developed custom WordPress plugins from scratch.
- You cannot explain how you have implemented caching for a high-traffic WordPress platform.
- You are not comfortable with modern PHP 8.x, Composer, PSR standards, and automated testing.
- You are not current with WordPress 6.9–7.x, the block editor, and Phase 3 collaboration.
- You have never handled a large-scale content migration.
- You rely on editing production files directly instead of Git and CI-based deployments.
- Your notice period is longer than 15 days.
What You Can Expect
- Full-time contract opportunity.
- Remote and flexible work environment within India.
- Ownership of a high-volume WordPress publishing platform.
- Direct collaboration with editorial and newsroom teams.
- Opportunity to work on platform architecture, performance, migrations, APIs, security, and major WordPress upgrades.
