Kabadiwalla Connect

India

Kabadiwalla Connect Environmental Foundation (KCEF) is the not-for-profit arm of Kabadiwalla Connect Pvt. Ltd., a Chennai-based social enterprise working to improve urban waste-management systems through inclusive, decentralised and technology-enabled approaches, with a particular focus on the participation of the informal recycling sector.

KCEF was established to undertake programmes where the principal objective is environmental and social impact. Its work includes community-based waste management, circular economy initiatives, the welfare and inclusion of informal waste workers, environmental awareness and engagement, and other programmes aligned with community development and sustainability.

KCEF also supports grassroots sport as a platform for community engagement, youth participation and the constructive use of shared and public spaces. While distinct from Kabadiwalla Connect’s core waste-management activities, these programmes reflect KCEF’s broader mandate to support initiatives that contribute to stronger, more inclusive and environmentally conscious communities.

Across these areas, KCEF’s programmes are characterised by direct field engagement, partnerships with local stakeholders, and an emphasis on practical implementation and measurable impact.

About the Role

KCEF is looking for a Field & Content Intern to support the documentation and communication of its programmes across community waste management and grassroots sport.

The role will involve regular fieldwork across Chennai, including filming programme activities, conducting short interviews with participants and stakeholders, and developing short-form video and supporting content for digital platforms.

The intern will work across two distinct programme environments, requiring an ability to understand different subjects,

identify relevant human and programme stories, and communicate them clearly and engagingly through visual content.

The role is intended for someone at an early stage of their career who would benefit from structured exposure to field documentation, interviewing, short-form video production and content development.

What You Will Work On

The internship will involve:

- Shooting short-form video across our sport and community waste-management programmes.
- Learning how to frame and light shots effectively for mobile-first content.
- Editing reels and short videos, with a focus on pacing, structure and keeping the viewer engaged.
- Conducting short on-camera conversations with participants, community members and other stakeholders.
- Learning how to ask questions that produce natural and useful responses rather than rehearsed answers.
- Developing captions and supporting copy for social media.
- Organising footage and content according to a defined set of guidelines.
- Identifying interesting stories within programmes and activities that may not immediately appear suited to social media.

A significant part of the role will involve identifying and communicating compelling stories across very different programme contexts — from grassroots sport and community engagement to the more technical and often less visible systems involved in waste management and recycling.

What You Will Gain

By the end of the internship,

you should have:

- A portfolio of published short-form content across two very different programme areas.
- Practical experience taking a piece of content from field shoot to final post.
- Greater confidence interviewing and interacting with people you have not met before.
- A better understanding of framing, interviewing, editing and storytelling for short-form video.
- Experience producing content within real programme and organisational constraints.

Who We Are Looking For

This role would suit someone early in their career who wants to develop practical content-production skills quickly.

We are particularly interested in candidates who:

- Are interested in sport and comfortable spending time in the field.
- Are willing to approach and speak to people they do not know.
- Are already making videos, photographs, or other content in some form.
- Are curious and able to spot stories without always being told what the story is.
- Are comfortable receiving feedback and improving their work through repeated iterations.
- Can work independently once given a explicit brief.

Formal training in film or media is not required. A folder or portfolio of things you have already made will be more useful to us than a particular degree.

Practical Requirements

You will need:

- A smartphone with a good camera.
- The ability to travel to and from Mylapore and Nungambakkam and to field locations within Chennai as required.
- Availability for field shoots, including occasional activities determined by programme schedules.

Work-related travel will be compensated.

Stipend: Rs.10,000 Per Month.

Duration of Internship: 3 to 6 Months

Pay: ₹8,000.00 - ₹10,000.00 per month

Work Location: In person
