JOB DESCRIPTION Packaging Engineer – Connectors & Cable Assemblies Function Engineering / Product & Manufacturing Engineering Role Packaging Engineer Industry / Products Electrical connectors, cable assemblies, power/data connectivity products Reports To Engineering / Operations Engineering Manager Location Cochin 1. Role Purpose The Packaging Engineer will own the development, validation and continuous improvement of packaging solutions for connectors and cable assemblies, with particular focus on increasingly bulky and heavy cable products. The role will translate product, shipping, handling, storage and customer requirements into robust packaging systems that protect the product, optimize cube and weight, improve pallet utilization, and reduce total logistics and packaging cost. 2. Key Responsibilities Analyze shipping requirements by product, destination, transport mode and customer: road, air, sea, courier and parcel shipment. Develop packaging concepts for connectors, cable assemblies, power whips, harnesses and other large/heavy connectivity products. ( Boxes,Tape and Reel,ESD trays etc) Design primary, secondary and tertiary packaging including bags, trays, separators, cartons, end caps, reels, drums and pallet systems. Develop palletization schemes for bulky/heavy cable assemblies, including layer patterns, orientation, stacking height, center-of-gravity considerations, load distribution and container utilization. Determine packaging capacity and loading quantities using product dimensions, bend radius, cable weight, connector geometry and handling constraints. Perform shipping and distribution risk analysis considering vibration, shock, drop, compression, stacking, climatic exposure and repeated handling.
Define and execute packaging validation and transportation testing; establish acceptance criteria and document results. Work with logistics and supply-chain teams to evaluate freight cost, dimensional-weight impacts, pallet footprints, loading/unloading methods and warehouse storage requirements. Develop packaging standards, specifications, drawings, work instructions and packaging BOMs; maintain packaging documentation through engineering changes. Collaborate with product design, manufacturing, quality, sourcing and operations during recent product introduction and design changes. Participate in DFM/DFA, DFMEA/PFMEA and design reviews to identify packaging and shipping risks early in the product-development cycle. Identify opportunities for reusable/returnable packaging, material reduction, standardization and sustainability improvement. Support supplier development and qualification for corrugated boxes, thermoform trays, tape and reel and knowledge about ESD protection on packaging items Investigate packaging-related customer complaints, transit damage and internal handling damage using structured problem-solving and corrective-action methods. Drive continuous improvement/Kaizen projects focused on packaging cost, logistics efficiency, product protection and ease of handling. Packaging CAD and 2D drawing creation; ability to interpret product drawings and GD&T; is preferred.
Packaging optimization using spreadsheets, CAD layouts and/or simulation tools for palletization and cube utilization. Engineering calculations for compression, stacking, load distribution, center of gravity and basic material strength. Use of structured problem-solving methods such as 8D, 5-Why, Fishbone and DOE where appropriate. 3. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering or a related discipline. Typically 5–10 years of relevant experience in industrial packaging, product packaging, logistics engineering or packaging development; experience with heavy/industrial products is highly desirable. aHands-on experience with corrugated packaging, wood pallets, foam/protective materials, plastic packaging and/or returnable packaging systems. Experience with palletization and transport optimization for heavy, bulky or long products. Experience supporting new product introduction and working with cross-functional engineering and manufacturing teams. Working knowledge of CAD and engineering drawings; proficiency in Excel and data analysis. 4. Preferred Experience Experience with electrical connectors, cable assemblies, harnesses, power distribution products or similar electromechanical products. Experience packaging products with large cable diameters, high conductor sizes, heavy copper/aluminum content or high overall assembly weight. Experience with customer-specific packaging specifications and international shipping requirements. Experience with ISTA transportation testing and packaging validation. Exposure to ERP/MRP systems and packaging BOM/part-number management.
