Key Roles & Responsibilities:
- Prepare detailed 2D structural drawings for steel structures using AutoCAD.
- Develop GA (General Arrangement) drawings, fabrication drawings, erection drawings, and structural details.
- Prepare drawings for columns, beams, rafters, bracings, purlins, girts, platforms, stairs, handrails, ladders, and other steel members.
- Read and understand structural design drawings, architectural drawings, specifications, and engineering calculations.
- Coordinate structural drawings with civil, architectural, MEP, and other engineering disciplines.
- Prepare shop/fabrication drawings with proper dimensions, member sizes, connections, bolt details, weld details, plates, stiffeners, and material specifications.
- Incorporate engineer/client comments and revise drawings accordingly.
- Maintain proper drawing numbering, revision control, title blocks, and document records.
- Check drawings for dimensional accuracy, clashes, constructability, and consistency before submission.
- Prepare drawings suitable for fabrication and site erection.
- Coordinate with fabrication and site teams to resolve drawing-related issues.
- Review site requirements and modify drawings based on actual site conditions where required.
- Prepare as-built drawings based on approved site changes.
BOQ & Quantity Take-Off Responsibilities
- Prepare BOQ (Bill of Quantities) for structural steel works from approved drawings.
- Carry out material quantity take-off (MTO) from structural and fabrication drawings.
- Calculate quantities of:
- Structural steel sections
- Plates
- Base plates
- Brackets
- Stiffeners
- Bolts and nuts
- Welding materials
- Purlins and girts
- Decking, if applicable
- Handrails and ladders
- Staircase components
- Calculate steel weight in kg/MT based on section sizes and lengths.
- Prepare material lists and cutting lists for fabrication.
- Compare BOQ quantities with drawing quantities and identify variations.
- Support estimation, costing, procurement, and material planning.
- Track material consumption vs. BOQ quantity during fabrication/construction.
- Prepare variation quantity statements for additional or deleted works.
- Coordinate with procurement and project teams regarding required steel materials.
Construction Support
- Provide technical drawing support to the fabrication and erection teams.
- Clarify dimensions, connections, member locations, and drawing details with site engineers.
- Review fabrication progress against approved drawings.
- Assist in identifying site discrepancies and drawing clashes.
- Prepare revised drawings for approved modifications.
- Coordinate with structural engineers regarding design changes and RFI/technical queries.
- Ensure construction/fabrication follows the latest approved revision.
Software Skills
Typical software requirements include:
- AutoCAD 2D structural drafting
- MS Excel – BOQ, MTO, quantity calculations and material tracking
- Tekla Structures – steel detailing/fabrication drawings, if applicable
