Project Brief

Each year, millions are sickened from influenza and 250,000 to 500,000 people die, as seasonal epidemics, frequent pandemics and spill over events spread each year, affecting between 5% and 30% of the global population. A universal influenza vaccine able to protect against influenza in all populations offers the greatest cost-effective hope for preventing seasonal and pandemic outbreaks. While significant progress in understanding the influenza virus has led to the development of multiple vaccines over the past 50 years, there has been limited progress in improving the protection conferred by influenza vaccines.

INCENTIVE is a highly integrated consortium between Indian, European and US based research institutions to reduce the worldwide burden resulting from its outbreaks. The main strategic goal of INCENTIVE is to establish a cornerstone toward the development of next generation influenza vaccines to reduce the worldwide burden resulting from disease outbreaks. Under INCENTIVE, PHFI will develop an influenza surveillance system to conduct influenza surveillance in the community to measure the influenza incidence, morbidity and mortality.
