Cloud Database Platform Engineer

Overview:

The Cloud Database Platform Engineer will be responsible for the successful maintenance and growth of Costco’s Cloud Database environments/technologies. This position will ensure Costco’s database platforms have stability, resilience and optimal performance. The Cloud Database Platform Engineer will work with Costco’s Infrastructure and Architecture teams to ensure that best practices are followed in supporting multiple enterprise platforms.

Responsibilities:

Database Platforms:

- Maintains database security, integrity, and availability.
- Manages database performance and capacity.
- Works with team members to establish routine maintenance; monitoring; alerting; metrics.




- collection/logging to proactively identify database related issues, ensuring the database is always highly responsive.
- Reviews performance stats and recommends changes for SQL query tuning/optimization.
- Participate in off hours 24/7 on call support on a rotational basis
- Assumes ownership of database issues; pursues problem resolution and root cause analysis.
- Works with the Cloud vendors/providers to create a strategy for migrating/upgrading
- databases to minimize business impact.
- Stays current on the key facets of the applications that leverage the databases being
- Supported.
- Learns and stays current on the features and functionality of Google BigQuery.
- Develops a thorough knowledge and understanding of cross system interactions as well as an enterprise view of Costco’s Data Warehousing landscape
- Maintains detailed documentation.

Technical Skills:

Database Platforms:

- 8-12+ years of Data Warehousing experience with at least 2 years being on multiple platforms.
- 6+ years of “hands-on” experience with Google BigQuery and/or Azure Synapse
- Effective use of AI and/or LLMs to increase efficiency in deliverables
- Solid understanding of Dimensional Modeling
- Understanding of CI/CD pipelines, Azure DevOps, and GitHub Actions
- Understanding of networking principles
- Knowledge of Terraform and/or Infrastructure as Code (IaC) methodology
