Role &
responsibilities The Sustainability Manager will be responsible for developing and implementing Torq's group-wide sustainability strategy, driving ESG and impact initiatives across the trading and processing value chain, ensuring compliance with emerging supply chain regulations (including EUDR), meeting the environmental and social requirements of lenders and development finance institutions, managing external sustainability partners and consultants, and embedding sustainable practices across the organisation.
This is a build-from-scratch role. The ideal candidate will combine strategic thinking with hands-on execution, be comfortable working independently in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial setting, and be willing to spend meaningful time at origin in West Africa and at processing sites in India.
Sustainability Strategy & Program Development
- Develop and implement Torq's sustainability vision, strategy, and roadmap aligned with business objectives and commodity footprint (oilseeds, grains, edible nuts, coffee).
- Identify priority focus areas such as sustainable agriculture, traceability, climate resilience, farmer livelihoods, circularity, resource efficiency, and responsible sourcing.
- Establish sustainability goals, KPIs, and performance metrics; build sustainability governance processes and frameworks from scratch.
ESG Measurement, Reporting & Disclosure
- Design and implement systems to measure, track, and report environmental and social impact across operations and value chains.
- Lead ESG reporting and disclosures under frameworks such as GRI, CDP, and BRSR; respond to customer sustainability questionnaires and prepare for future compliance needs.
- Establish greenhouse gas accounting under the GHG Protocol (Scope 1, 2, and 3), recognising that the majority of a trading group's footprint sits in the supply chain.
- Develop sustainability dashboards and periodic reports for leadership and stakeholders.
Regulatory Compliance & Supply Chain Due Diligence
- Own compliance with the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) for in-scope commodities (coffee, soy), including geolocation-level traceability, due diligence statements, and supplier data systems for EU-bound cargo.
- Build and operate human rights and environmental due diligence (HREDD) processes across West African and Indian supply chains, covering labour rights and child labour risk.
- Monitor emerging regulations (e.g., CSDDD and equivalent regimes) and prepare the group ahead of applicability.
Lender & DFI Environmental and Social Requirements
- Develop and maintain the group's Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) aligned with IFC Performance Standards.
- Lead the E&S; workstream in due diligence by development finance institutions and trade finance lenders; implement and report on Environmental and Social Action Plans (ESAPs).
Certifications & Responsible Sourcing
- Identify, initiate,
and manage certification pathways relevant to the product portfolio, such as Rainforest Alliance, Fairtrade, Organic, and FSSC 22000.
- Work with origination and processing teams to embed certification and responsible sourcing requirements at farm gate and factory level.
Consultant & Stakeholder Management
- Liaise with external sustainability consultants, ESG advisory firms, certification bodies, and impact assessment agencies; manage assessments, audits, and reporting projects.
- Ensure implementation of consultant recommendations across relevant teams.
Partnerships & External Engagement
- Build and manage relationships with NGOs, industry associations, research institutions, certification agencies, and government bodies.
- Identify and manage sustainability-related partnerships, grants, and collaboration opportunities; represent Torq at industry forums, conferences, and sustainability events.
CSR & Foundation Coordination
- Coordinate the group's CSR programme, including compliance with Section 135 of the Indian Companies Act where applicable, and support the grant-making activities of the Torq Impact Foundation.
Internal Awareness & Capability Building
- Champion sustainability across the organisation; conduct awareness sessions and workshops for employees and stakeholders.
- Collaborate with the MarComm team to strengthen Torq's sustainability narrative, thought leadership, and brand positioning; support development of sustainability-related communication materials and impact stories.
