Role Overview
We are looking for an experienced AI Engineer with a strong hands-on Java development background to design and develop enterprise-grade Java microservices using modern AI-assisted and agentic development platforms. The primary responsibility is to leverage different AI models, coding agents and agentic engineering platforms, including Kiro, Agentic X and other emerging AI development tools, to accelerate the development of Java/Spring Boot microservices, APIs, integrations and messaging components.
The successful candidate must fundamentally be a solid core developer who can use AI to improve development speed and productivity while retaining full engineering ownership of the generated code. The engineer must be capable of understanding, reviewing, debugging, correcting, optimizing, and productionising AI-generated code.
Key Responsibilities
- Use Kiro, Agentic X and other AI/LLM-based development models and coding agents to rapidly design, generate and develop Java microservices and associated components.
- Evaluate different AI models and agentic development approaches and select the most effective tool/model for specific engineering activities.
- Translate business and technical requirements into clear specifications, prompts and development tasks suitable for AI-assisted development.
- Design and develop scalable, secure and production-ready Java/Spring Boot microservices.
- Develop REST APIs, service endpoints, integration components and event-driven/messaging services.
- Use AI-generated code as an accelerator while maintaining complete ownership of code quality and engineering standards.
- Review AI-generated Java code and identify functional, architectural, security, maintainability and performance issues.
- Debug, modify, refactor and optimize AI-generated code to meet enterprise production standards.
- Ensure solutions follow established microservices architecture, coding standards, design patterns and security practices.
- Develop integrations using enterprise messaging technologies, particularly IBM MQ and Apache Kafka.
- Work with relational and NoSQL databases such as Oracle and MongoDB where required.
- Build and maintain automated CI/CD pipelines and integrate development activities with existing DevOps processes.
- Develop appropriate unit, integration and component tests for AI-generated and manually developed code.
- Work closely with architects, engineering teams and business stakeholders to convert requirements into working software quickly.
- Continuously evaluate emerging AI coding models, agents and development tools and introduce suitable capabilities into the engineering lifecycle.
- Contribute reusable AI-assisted engineering patterns, prompts, accelerators and development frameworks to improve engineering productivity.
Mandatory Technical Skills Java & Microservices Development
- Minimum 8 years of software engineering experience with significant hands-on core development experience.
- Strong hands-on expertise in Java and Spring Boot.
- Proven experience designing and developing enterprise-grade microservices.
- Strong understanding of REST APIs, service endpoints, integration patterns and distributed application architecture.
- Strong core developer background with the ability to independently analyze and resolve complex technical issues.
AI-Assisted / Agentic Development
- Approximately 3-5 years of relevant AI / AI-assisted engineering experience, including practical exposure to Generative AI, LLMs, coding assistants or agentic development approaches.
- Hands-on ability to use AI models and development agents to generate and accelerate production software development.
- Experience or willingness to work extensively with Kiro, Agentic X and other AI coding / agentic development platforms.
- Ability to provide requirements, context and engineering specifications to AI models to obtain high-quality code.
- Ability to understand, validate,
debug, fix, refactor and optimize AI-generated code.
- Ability to identify incorrect, insecure or sub-optimal AI-generated implementations rather than accepting generated code without engineering validation.
- Understanding of AI-assisted SDLC across design, development, testing, documentation and code review.
Messaging & Integration
- Strong understanding of enterprise messaging and asynchronous integration patterns.
- Hands-on experience with IBM MQ.
- Hands-on experience with Apache Kafka.
- Understanding of event-driven architectures, queues, topics, producers, consumers and messaging reliability patterns.
DevOps
- Good hands-on understanding of DevOps and CI/CD.
- Experience integrating Java applications into automated build, test and deployment pipelines.
- Familiarity with modern source control, build and deployment practices.
Desirable Skills
- Working knowledge of databases including Oracle, MongoDB and other relational / NoSQL databases.
- Experience working within Banking or Financial Services.
- Understanding of enterprise security, authentication, authorization, API security and secure coding practices.
- Experience working with highly available and business-critical enterprise applications.
Payments Domain Optional / Advantageous
- SWIFT messaging.
- ISO 20022 / MX messages.
- ISO 15022 / MT messages.
- Payment message transformation, validation and routing.
- Integration of payment services with messaging platforms such as IBM MQ and Kafka.
Ideal Candidate Profile We are specifically looking for a Core Java Engineer who has evolved into an AI-enabled software engineer, rather than a traditional Data Science or Machine Learning profile. The ideal candidate should be capable of taking a requirement such as a new microservice, API endpoint, Kafka producer/consumer or IBM MQ integration and using AI models and agentic development tools to significantly accelerate implementation, while personally validating and taking engineering ownership of the final solution.
The key measure of success for this role will be the ability to combine strong hands-on Java engineering expertise with AI-assisted development to deliver high-quality enterprise software faster, safely and with greater engineering productivity.
