Description The Mechanical Engineering (ME) group is responsible for providing support for the world class Omega Laser facility and scientists who are on the forefront of fusion, high energy density physics, and materials research.

- The ME Group Leader (MEGL) oversees a group of ~40 mechanical engineers, mechanical specialists, instrument model makers, and students that are vertically integrated to execute the design, fabrication, assembly, installation, and integration of instruments and equipment into the Omega facilities and support laboratories. The MEGL’s direct reports consists of three managers and a team of senior engineers.
- The MEGL facilitates the timely execution of projects monitoring the workflow, identifying obstacles/roadblocks and working with team members to establish corrective actions that result in a successful and timely outcome.
- The MEGL develops processes to insure the integrity of engineering documentation (CAD models, drawings, safety analyses, data, etc.)
- The MEGL will maintain their technical expertise in a chosen area through individual technical contributions
- The MEGL position has onsite work requirements with the option for a hybrid arrangement

Responsibilities

- Personnel management: prepare, review, and conduct performance evaluations for the ME group, recruiting and retention, and conflict resolution
- Track and communicate progress: Conduct group meetings (design, assembly, production control); identity issues and blocks, review project status (design, fabrication, assembly, and integration), prepare a weekly project status report
- Team Engagement: Participate in design reviews and provide technical support in key project working group meetings.
- Technical work: Perform engineering work in an area of the individual’s expertise (design, analysis, project management, systems engineering, etc.)
- Fiscal management: Prepare and manage budget and support contracts (Tot. >$5M)
- Accountable for engineering documentation quality through ownership of standards, and approval and change management processes
- Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required

- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, or for exceptional candidates a Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field with significant years of relevant experience
- Demonstrated experience managing a team of engineers, specialists, and / or technicians and 5+ years of engineering experience in design, analysis, build and/or testing.
- Management: Communication (verbal and written), delegation, empowerment, decision making, presentation skills, strategic thinking,



change management, teamwork, consensus building, conflict resolution
- Candidate must have the ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance

Preferred

- Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) plus degree in Engineering Management or Business Administration
- 5+ years managing a multidisciplinary group (engineers, technicians, tool makers) responsible for the design, fabrication, assembly, and integration/assembly.
- Experience with scientific instrument development, structural hardware in research environment, high vacuum and cleanroom spaces, and/or complex opto-mechanical systems.
- Experience in a energetic research environment delivering custom designed solutions and low volume production.
- Technical: Working knowledge of CAD, GD&T;, Standards (ASME, ANSI), FEA, test and measurement, Product Lifecycle Management, Project management, and Enterprise-class engineering software

SALARY RANGE: $90,000 to $175,000 Annually The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates are set within the job's compensation range, and determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
