This role acts as a technical bridge between design, manufacturing, quality, and production teams to ensure products and tools are accurate, manufacturable, cost-effective, and high in quality. The Design Engineer also supports new product development, process improvement, and manufacturing problem-solving.
Roles & Responsibilities (Detailed Explanation)
1. Design & Drafting
What this means:
This is the core responsibility of the Design Engineer.
Explanation:
•
Create 3D models of parts, assemblies, and tools using SolidWorks to visualize how components fit and function.
•
Prepare 2D drawings in SolidWorks and AutoCAD for manufacturing and inspection.
•
Develop detailed manufacturing drawings that include dimensions, tolerances, surface finish, materials, and heat treatment details.
•
Prepare assembly drawings showing how multiple components fit together.
•
Create and maintain accurate Bill of Materials (BOM).
•
Apply GD&T; (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing) to ensure functional fit and interchangeability.
•
Ensure drawings are error-free, clear, and production-ready.
2. Jigs & Fixtures
What this means:
Designing tools that hold, locate, and support parts during manufacturing and inspection.
Explanation:
•
Design jigs and fixtures for machining, welding, inspection, and assembly operations.
•
Ensure fixtures provide accurate positioning and repeatability to maintain product quality.
•
Improve production efficiency by reducing setup time and operator dependency.
•
Focus on operator safety, ergonomics, and ease of use.
•
Participate in fixture trials on the shop floor and make modifications based on feedback.
•
Standardize fixture designs to reduce cost and improve maintainability.
3. Tool & Die
What this means:
Designing tools used in press operations and mass production.
Explanation:
•
Design press tools, dies, punches, and related tooling according to part geometry and production volume.
•
Prepare strip layouts showing material flow, stations, and scrap utilization.
•
Develop tool layouts and detailed drawings for manufacturing and assembly.
•
Support tool manufacturing, tool assembly, and trial runs.
•
Analyse tool performance and implement improvements for tool life and productivity.
4. Manufacturing Support
What this means:
Supporting production teams to ensure designs work well in real manufacturing conditions.
Explanation:
- Work closely with production, quality, and maintenance teams during new product
introduction (NPI).
- Address manufacturing issues such as fitment problems, dimensional variations, or
tooling failures.
- Provide quick design corrections and updates to minimize downtime.
- Support cost reduction initiatives by optimizing designs, materials, and processes.
- Participate in process improvement activities to enhance productivity and quality.

Explanation:
- Maintain design documentation, revision history, and engineering change records.
- Ensure designs comply with customer specifications, internal standards, and industry
norms.
- Assist in preparing documentation for PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) and
APQP (Advanced Product Quality Planning).
- Support inspection and quality teams with control plans, inspection drawings, and
technical clarifications.
- Ensure all design changes are properly approved and documented.
6. Vendor & Team Coordination
What this means:
Working with internal teams and external vendors.
Explanation:
- Coordinate with tool vendors and suppliers for tool manufacturing, modifications, and
timelines.
- Review vendor drawings and ensure compliance with design intent.
- Participate in design reviews and technical discussions with customers and internal
stakeholders.
