Job Purpose To manage end-to-end purchasing activities, ensure timely availability of materials, develop reliable suppliers, obtain competitive pricing, and support production requirements while maintaining quality, cost and delivery standards.
Key Responsibilities
1. Purchase & Procurement
- Handle day-to-day purchase activities for production, fabrication, machine shop, electrical, consumables, spares and general materials.
- Receive and verify material purchase requirements from Production, Stores, Design, Maintenance and other departments.
- Prepare and release Purchase Orders (PO) after proper approval.
- Ensure timely procurement as per production and project schedules.
1. Vendor Management
- Identify, evaluate and develop new suppliers.
- Maintain good relationships with existing vendors.
- Negotiate price, payment terms, delivery schedules and other commercial conditions.
- Obtain and compare multiple quotations before finalizing suppliers.
- Monitor supplier performance on Quality, Cost and Delivery (QCD) .
1. Cost Control
- Negotiate competitive rates and achieve cost savings.
- Conduct market price comparisons for major materials.
- Monitor price fluctuations of steel, engineering components, electrical items, consumables and other materials.
- Support management in developing cost-reduction initiatives.
1. Material Follow-up
- Follow up with suppliers for timely delivery.
- Coordinate with Stores and Production regarding pending and urgent materials.
- Track open Purchase Orders and pending deliveries.
- Escalate delays that may affect production schedules.
1. Quality Coordination
- Coordinate with the Quality Department regarding incoming material quality issues.
- Communicate rejection/replacement requirements to suppliers.
- Ensure suppliers comply with required specifications and drawings.
1. Documentation & ERP/SAP
- Maintain purchase records, quotations, comparative statements, POs and supplier documents.
- Update purchase and supplier information in ERP/SAP or company purchase systems.
- Maintain proper documentation for audit and management review.
1. Inventory & Planning Support
- Coordinate with Stores to avoid stock-outs and excess inventory.
- Review minimum/maximum stock levels and critical items.
- Support production planning by ensuring materials are available as per schedule.
1. Supplier Development
- Develop alternate sources for critical materials.
- Conduct supplier evaluation and performance reviews.
- Improve supplier base for better quality, pricing and delivery reliability.
Required Qualification
- Diploma / B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, or related field.
- Additional qualification in Supply Chain / Procurement will be an advantage.
Experience
- 4–7 years of relevant experience in Purchase / Procurement.
- Experience in engineering manufacturing, fabrication, machine shop, foundry machinery or industrial equipment will be preferred.
Technical Skills
- Knowledge of engineering materials and components.
- Knowledge of MS/CS/SS materials, fabrication items, fasteners, bearings, electrical items, machining components and industrial consumables.
- Vendor negotiation and quotation comparison.
- Purchase Order preparation and follow-up.
- ERP/SAP knowledge preferred.
- MS Excel and basic reporting skills.
- Understanding of drawings, specifications and BOMs is an advantage.
