Production Manager (Seed Processing Plant)

Role

- You will be responsible for managing end-to-end seed processing activities, ensuring optimum plant productivity, maintaining seed quality standards, reducing processing losses, and ensuring compliance with safety and operational procedures.
- This role requires a strong combination of technical expertise in seed science and practical experience in managing large-scale seed processing plant operations.

Key Responsibilities 1. Seed Processing Operations

F Manage the complete seed processing operations from receipt of raw/harvested seed to finished processed seed.

- Plan and supervise activities such as: Seed drying
- Pre-cleaning
- Cleaning
- Grading
- Seed sizing
- Gravity separation
- Destoning
- Treating/coating
- Packing
- Storage and dispatch

F Ensure optimum utilization of processing capacity and manpower. F Monitor processing parameters to achieve maximum recovery and minimum seed loss.

F Develop and implement effective processing methods based on crop and seed characteristics.

2. Seed Science & Technical Expertise

F Apply strong knowledge of Seed Science and Technology in day-to-day processing decisions.

F Understand seed characteristics including moisture, purity,



germination, vigour, physical damage, seed size, density, and varietal characteristics.

F Identify processing methods suitable for different crop varieties and seed lots.

F Work closely with Quality and R&D; teams to maintain seed quality throughout processing.

F Understand the impact of processing conditions on germination, vigour and seed viability.

3. Production Planning & Execution

F Prepare daily, weekly and monthly production plans based on business requirements.

F Plan production capacity, manpower, machinery and material requirements.

F Ensure timely completion of processing targets.

F Monitor production against planned targets and take corrective actions for deviations.

F Improve production throughput and overall plant efficiency.

4. Plant & Machinery Management

F Ensure effective operation and utilization of seed processing equipment and machinery.

F Coordinate with the Maintenance team for preventive and breakdown maintenance.

F Identify recurring machine-related issues and implement corrective measures.

F Support installation and commissioning of new seed processing machinery.

F Recommend process and equipment improvements to enhance productivity and quality.

5. Inventory & Material Management

F Monitor seed movement from receiving to processing, storage and dispatch.

F Ensure proper identification and traceability of seed lots.

F Control processing losses and wastage.

F Coordinate with Stores and Supply Chain teams for smooth material movement.

F Ensure proper storage conditions for processed and unprocessed seeds.

6. Team & Manpower Management

F Lead and manage production supervisors, operators, technicians and contract manpower.

F Allocate manpower according to production requirements.

F Train employees on seed processing techniques, machine operation, quality and safety.

F Establish performance standards for production personnel.

F Maintain discipline and productivity within the production team.

Process Improvement & Cost Optimization

F Identify opportunities to improve processing recovery, productivity and operational efficiency.

F Reduce:

- Seed losses
- Reprocessing
- Machine downtime
- Labour costs
- Energy consumption
- Material wastage

F Implement Lean/continuous improvement initiatives wherever applicable. F Develop SOPs and process standards for seed processing activities.

8. Quality Management

F Ensure processed seeds meet defined quality specifications and industry standards.

F Coordinate with Quality Control/Quality Assurance teams for:

- Physical purity
- Germination
- Moisture
- Seed vigour
- Seed health

F Other relevant quality parameters F Investigate quality deviations and implement appropriate corrective and preventive actions.

F Minimize seed damage, admixture, contamination and lot-to-lot mixing.

9. Safety & Compliance

F Ensure compliance with all plant safety procedures and statutory requirements.

F Ensure employees use appropriate PPE and follow safe working practices.

F Conduct regular safety inspections and identify potential hazards.

F Maintain proper documentation related to production, quality, safety and plant operations.

Preferred candidate profile

1. BSc in Seed Science & Technology / Seed Technology / Agriculture / Agronomy or a closely related field with 10+ years of relevant experience in seed processing/seed industry.

2. Strong practical experience in managing seed processing plant operations.

3. Robust technical understanding of Seed Science and Technology.

4. Experience with commercial-scale seed processing plants.

5. Experience handling multiple crops and seed varieties.
