Senior Backend Engineer (Java)

An experienced backend engineer working on document processing and content transformation systems within the academic publishing domain.

The role spans core Java development, complex file-format and specification handling, and backend service integration across cloud, messaging, and rules infrastructure.

Areas of Knowledge & Expertise

1. Core Language, OOP & Algorithmic Foundations

Java 17 as the primary language, with exposure to ANTLR4, Drools 8/MVEL rule engines, JavaScript, C++17, Pascal, and Lua. Strong grounding in OOP principles and design patterns (Visitor, Strategy, Adapter, Decorator, Facade). Comfortable applying tree traversal algorithms and dynamic programming; forward/backward chaining and branch-and-bound are a plus.

2. Document, Markup & Typesetting Format Expertise

Solid working knowledge of core web and document specifications (HTML5, XML/XSLT, JSON, CSS) and academic publishing formats (PDF Specification, JATS Specification, Unicode/UTF-8/16/32). Exposure to the broader publishing-format landscape — MathML, SVG, LaTeX/BibTeX/TeX engines, WIRIS MathType (MTEF), Microsoft Office formats (WordprocessingML, DrawingML, OMML, VML), legacy MS-DOC/CFB formats, bibliography styles and formats, font formats, and extended character encodings — is a strong plus.

3. Backend Frameworks, Integration & Infrastructure

Spring ecosystem (Framework, Boot, Integration), OpenFeign, and Jackson Core/DataBind, with document-processing libraries (PDFBox, Apache POI)



and Docker/AWS S3/GCP Storage for deployment and storage. Experience with Aspose.Words, search/NLP libraries (Apache Lucene, Stanford CoreNLP), messaging systems (Kafka, Artemis JMS/Tibco EMS), and native interop via JNI (FontConfig, FreeType, HarfBuzz, Graphite2, TECKit) is a plus.

4. Build, Quality & Observability Tooling

Gradle 8 build pipelines, GitHub Actions CI, and testing with JUnit 5 and Mockito are core to the role. Familiarity with static analysis (Checkstyle, Spotbugs, XMLUnit) and observability tooling (Prometheus, Grafana, Kibana/ELK Stack) is a plus.
