Role & responsibilities :
Technical Data Engineering Lead Insurance Data Platforms
Location: Karapakkam, Chennai
Department: IT
Role Overview
Insurance
data engineering extends beyond data movement and requires accurate handling of
highfrequency claims data, complex policy schemas, and strict regulatory
requirements (IRDA, IFRS 17).
This role
is responsible for leading the design, development, and delivery of
enterprise data management, data warehouse, and analytics platforms for
insurance systems. The position focuses on integrating data from policy
administration systems, claims platforms, finance, CRM, and thirdparty sources
into a reliable and governed analytics ecosystem.
The role
places strong emphasis on technical leadership, team management, deep SQL /
PLSQL expertise, Python-based data processing, and enabling analytics
platforms to support reporting, dashboards, and business insights for
underwriting, claims, actuarial, and finance teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Data
Architecture & Design:
Design and evolve enterprise data warehouse, data mart, and analytics
architectures, supporting operational, historical, and analytical use cases
across insurance domains.
- Data
Engineering & Integration:
Lead development of complex ETL / ELT pipelines using SQL, PL/SQL, and
Python to integrate multiple internal and external data sources across business
functions.
- Data
Modeling:
Develop insurancefocused data models, including:
- Star / Snowflake schemas for claims, premiums, and profitability analytics
- ODS and core models for policy, endorsements, renewals, and claims lifecycle tracking
- Analytics
& BI Enablement:
Collaborate with reporting and business teams to enable analytics and
visualization platforms such as Qlik Sense, Power BI, and Tableau,
ensuring optimized data models and trusted datasets for dashboards and MIS
reporting.
- Data
Quality & Governance:
Implement data quality checks, reconciliations, audit controls, and validation
frameworks to support regulatory, actuarial, and financial reporting.
- Performance
Optimization:
Drive performance tuning of SQL / PLSQL queries, stored procedures, batch
jobs, and data extracts to ensure scalability and timely data availability.
- Delivery
& Stakeholder Management:
Partner with business stakeholders across Claims, Underwriting, Actuarial,
Finance, and Sales to translate business requirements into robust data and
analytics solutions across multiple programs.
- Leadership
& Team Management:
Lead and mentor a team of data engineers and developers, conduct code
and design reviews, manage delivery timelines, and ensure adherence to
development and documentation standards.
Technical Requirements
- Data
Engineering & Warehousing:
8+ years of experience delivering enterprise data warehouse and data
management solutions, preferably within insurance or BFSI environments.
- SQL
& PL/SQL Expertise:
Strong handson expertise in SQL and PL/SQL, including complex joins,
stored procedures, functions, bulk data processing, and performance tuning.
- Programming
(Python):
Working knowledge of Python for data processing, automation,
validations, and integration workflows.
- ETL
& Data Integration:
Experience working on multiple data management initiatives, including
data ingestion, transformation, reconciliation, and downstream analytics
enablement.
- Analytics
& BI Platforms:
Handson experience supporting or enabling Qlik Sense, Power BI, or Tableau,
including data preparation, performance optimization, and semantic layer
design.
- Data
Modeling:
Robust experience with dimensional modeling, ODS design, and enterprise data
models for reporting and analytics.
- Delivery
& Governance:
Understanding of enterprise delivery models, production support, batch
monitoring, release management, and data governance practices.
- Insurance
Domain (Preferred):
Handson experience with insurance processes and systems, including
policy, claims, premiums, renewals, endorsements, and regulatory reporting.
Preferred candidate profile :
- Education:
Bachelors or Masters degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or
related field.
- Experience:
- 8+ years of overall experience in data engineering / data warehousing
- 23+ years in a technical lead or people management role
- Certifications
(Optional):
Cloud Data / Analytics certifications from AWS, Azure, or GCP, database, or insurance domain certifications are a plus but not mandatory.
