Overview
- We are looking for a detail-oriented Gimbal Hardware Engineer with solid expertise in electromechanical integration, hardware design, and ruggedized system development.
- The ideal candidate will focus on the physical and electrical hardware aspects of gimbal systems, ensuring reliability in harsh environmental conditions.
- This role is suited for a hands-on hardware specialist who excels in connectors, harnessing, sealing, thermal management, and system-level integration of gimbal subsystems.
Key Responsibilities
- Hardware Design & Integration Design and develop robust hardware architecture for 2-axis/3-axis gimbal systems.
- Integrate motors, sensors, cameras, PCBs, and wiring subsystems into compact and reliable assemblies.
- Ensure proper mechanical-electrical interfacing, grounding, and shielding practices.
- Connectors, Harness & Wiring
- Select and validate connectors (circular, micro-D, board-to-board, rugged connectors) based on application requirements.
- Design and develop wiring harnesses, including routing, strain relief, and serviceability.
- Ensure compliance with communication protocol harness standards for: o UART, RS232, RS485 o Ethernet / IP-based systems o Video signal transmission (HDMI, LVDS, MIPI, etc.)
- Perform signal integrity and EMI/EMC considerations in harness design.
- Environmental Protection & Sealing
- Design systems to meet IP ratings (IP65/IP67/IP68) for dust and water resistance.
- Select and implement gaskets, O-rings, sealing compounds, and potting materials.
- Ensure proper waterproofing and environmental sealing across enclosures, connectors, and cable interfaces.
- Collaborate on shock, vibration,
and environmental robustness requirements.
- Thermal Management
- Analyze and implement thermal solutions including: 1) Heatsinks.
- 2) Thermal pads and interface materials.
- 3) Passive cooling strategies
- Ensure optimal heat dissipation for motors, electronics, and embedded systems.
- Motor & Hardware Component Selection
- Select appropriate gimbal motors (BLDC / torque motors) based on mechanical and electrical constraints.
- Evaluate hardware components such as fasteners, brackets, housings, and mounting interfaces.
- Understand mechanical load paths and ensure structural integrity.
- Testing & Validation
- Conduct hardware validation tests, including: 1) Waterproofing/IP tests 2) Vibration and shock testing 3) Thermal performance validation
- Troubleshoot hardware-related issues across connectors, wiring, and packaging.
- Support field testing and failure analysis.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical / Mechatronics / Electrical / Electronics Engineering or related field.
- 3+ years of hands-on experience in hardware design for rugged electromechanical systems.
- Strong understanding of: 1) Connectors and harness design 2) IP ratings and sealing techniques 3) Hardware integration in compact systems
- Proficiency in CAD tools and mechanical design fundamentals.
- Ability to interpret technical datasheets and standards.
Preferred Skills (Good to Have)
- Experience in UAV payloads, gimbals, or defense/aerospace hardware systems.
- Knowledge of EMI/EMC design considerations.
- Familiarity with industrial/military connector standards (MIL-spec).
- Experience with thermal simulation tools.
- Exposure to manufacturing processes and vendor coordination.
