Role & responsibilities
- PLC Programming & Control Development:
- Develop, test, and deploy PLC programs (using languages such as Ladder Logic, Function Block Diagram, or Structured Text) to control critical functions in BESS projects, including charging/discharging cycles, state-of-charge monitoring, thermal management, and fault detection.
- Integrate EMS functionalities such as load management, grid interconnection control, and emergency shutdown protocols into the PLC system.
- Create and maintain robust, modular, and scalable code that can adapt to evolving project requirements.
System Integration & Communication:
- Interface PLC systems with battery management systems (BMS), inverters, transformers, and other power electronics via standard protocols (e.g., Modbus, CAN, Ethernet/IP).
- Collaborate with control system engineers to integrate Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, ensuring seamless data exchange and system monitoring.
- Configure and test network communications to ensure reliable, real-time monitoring and control.
Design Validation & Testing:
- Develop detailed test plans and participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) for EMS control systems.
- Troubleshoot and debug control system issues during commissioning and post-installation phases.
- Work with cross-functional teams to validate that the control systems comply with project specifications, industry standards, and safety requirements.
Documentation & Compliance:
- Prepare and maintain technical documentation, including program code, flowcharts, wiring diagrams, and system manuals.
- Ensure that all programming and integration work adheres to relevant standards (e.g.,
IEC 61427, IEC 62133, UL 1973, UN 38.3) and regulatory requirements.
- Provide comprehensive training and support materials for system operators and maintenance personnel.
Continuous Improvement:
- Stay current with emerging technologies, programming best practices, and advancements in energy storage control systems.
- Propose enhancements to improve system performance, reliability, and scalability, ensuring that the EMS remains at the forefront of industry innovation.
- Collaborate in post-project reviews to capture lessons learned and refine control strategies for future projects.
Preferred candidate profile
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related field.
- 3-5 years of experience in PLC programming and control systems development, preferably in energy storage, renewable energy, or industrial automation projects.
- Robust knowledge of EMS, battery management systems (BMS), and power electronics in the context of BESS.
- Proficiency in programming languages used in PLCs (Ladder Logic, Structured Text, etc.) and familiarity with HMI/SCADA systems.
- Experience with communication protocols such as Modbus, CAN, and Ethernet/IP.
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- Experience working on utility-scale or commercial BESS projects.
- Familiarity with industry standards and regulatory requirements for energy storage systems (e.g., IEC, UL, UN 38.3).
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to document technical details clearly.
- Certification in relevant PLC programming or control systems (e.g., Siemens S7, Allen-Bradley, or similar platforms) is an advantage.
