About IGICH

The Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health (IGICH), Bengaluru is a premier autonomous tertiary care pediatric hospital functioning under the Ministry of Medical Education, Government of Karnataka. With over 900 beds, IGICH serves as the state’s primary referral centre for children, with a strong commitment to comprehensive healthcare for children from low socio-economic backgrounds. The Institute offers specialty services in Neonatal and Paediatric Critical Care, Paediatric Surgery, Neurology, Endocrinology, Haematology, Oncology, Dermatology, Orthopaedics, and HIV care. IGICH is also a recognized centre for postgraduate medical education affiliated with Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) and recognized by the National Medical Commission (NMC). IGICH has signed an MoU with the Pain Relief and Palliative Care Society (PRPCS), Hyderabad to deliver integrated paediatric palliative care including OPD, home care, and in-patient care.

About the Center of Excellence

The Pediatric Palliative Care Center of Excellence at IGICH is envisioned as a model center for clinical care, training, service innovation, and systems strengthening in pediatric palliative care. The Center will deliver holistic, child-centred, and family-focused care for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions. About the Role The Staff Nurse will be a core member of the interdisciplinary palliative care team, delivering compassionate, high-quality nursing care to children and families across in-patient, OPD, and home-care settings. The role requires sound clinical judgment, strong communication skills, emotional maturity, and the ability to support children and caregivers through serious illness, complex treatment journeys, and end-of-life care.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care

- Provide direct, evidence-based nursing care to children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions across in-patient wards, NICU/PICU, oncology units, and OPD.
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments including pain, symptom burden, nutritional status, and functional needs using age-appropriate pediatric tools.
- Administer medications including opioids and adjuvant analgesics safely, accurately,



and in accordance with physician orders and institutional protocols.
- Monitor and document patient progress, symptom changes, and response to treatment; escalate concerns promptly to the treating team.
- Assist in procedural care including IV access, wound management, enteral feeding, oxygen support, and other nursing interventions as required.
- Maintain infection prevention practices, patient safety standards, and timely clinical documentation.

Family-Centred and Psychosocial Care

- Build compassionate, trusting relationships with children and families navigating serious illness, uncertainty, and grief.
- Educate caregivers on symptom management, feeding, hygiene, medication administration, positioning, and home-care practices.
- Offer emotional support to families during hospitalisation, treatment transitions, end-of-life stages, and bereavement.
- Participate in family meetings and support clear communication between families and the interdisciplinary team.

Home Care Services

- Undertake home visits for enrolled children in coordination with the pediatric palliative care team.
- Assess home settings, caregiving capacity, symptom needs, and practical barriers affecting continuity of care.
- Train family caregivers in basic nursing care, medication administration, and recognition of redflag symptoms requiring escalation.
- Coordinate with community-based providers and local health workers where relevant.

Team Coordination

- Participate in interdisciplinary rounds, case reviews, discharge planning, and care coordination meetings.
- Collaborate with physicians, counsellors, social workers, psychologists, therapists, and volunteers.
- Maintain accurate records in required paper and digital formats and support continuity across settings.

Training and Quality

- Participate in in-service education, skill-building workshops, and mentorship activities related to pediatric palliative care.




- Support orientation of students, trainees, and junior nursing staff as needed.
- Contribute to audits, quality improvement initiatives, service data collection, and program documentation.

Qualifications

Essential

- B.Sc. Nursing preferred, or GNM from a recognized institution.
- Valid registration as a Registered Nurse.
- Minimum 5 years of nursing experience, preferably in critical care, acute care, oncology, pediatric care, and/or palliative care.
- Fluency in Kannada is mandatory.

Desirable

- Experience in pediatric palliative care, oncology nursing, ICU/PICU/NICU care, or community/home-based services.
- Knowledge of Tamil, Hindi, or Telugu.
- Additional training or certification in palliative care, pediatric nursing, oncology, or critical care.

Skills and Competencies

Clinical

- Pediatric assessment, pain and symptom management, medication safety, infection control, and family teaching.
- Confidence in caring for children with complex and chronic conditions.

Communication

- Ability to communicate clearly, sensitively, and respectfully with children, caregivers, and colleagues.
- Good documentation and reporting skills in English.
