Mechanical Design Manager at Unbox Robotics

About Unbox Robotics

We at Unbox Robotics are revolutionizing warehouses and distribution centers by building the world's most compact, powerful, and flexible mobile robotics systems for the new age of warehousing. Our product is the World's 1st of its kind AI-powered parcel sorting robotic system that gets installed 10X faster, saves 50+% space and improves productivity by more than 3X with 50% fewer robots than that of the competition. Founded in 2019, we are backed by marquee investors and angels. We are looking to add to our team of thinkers, innovators and doers and would love to have you join us at the Pune, India office and build the future of on-demand robotics logistics solutions

Roles & Responsibilities

- Own the mechanical design direction for the robot portfolio and peripheral structures across the full product range, from POC through production and sustaining phases, in alignment with cross-functional teams
- Set and drive the mechanical technology roadmap: architecture direction, platforming, modularity, and cross-program reuse
- Personally lead the hardest technical problems, exercising strong engineering judgment on design methods, materials, and validation, and setting the technical bar for others to follow
- Guide aggregate calculations, component and material selection, CAD models, drawings, tolerance stack-up, and structural and multibody dynamics analysis across the team, and use FEA and MBD outputs to steer architecture and design decisions
- Own the engineering specification, development timeline, validation, and release of major components, modules, and assemblies across programs, and chair design reviews with clear documentation and risk closure
- Review and approve design improvements, technical drawings, and manufacturing release packages, supported by analysis and test data
- Set and enforce mechanical engineering standards: design rules, GD&T; practice, DFM, DFA, DFMEA, CAD and PDM policy, and documentation discipline
- Own mechanical IP strategy: patent landscape and FTO awareness, design-around direction, disclosure quality bar, and portfolio priorities in coordination with legal and leadership
- Drive strategic supplier development, dual-sourcing, and localization for critical electro-mechanical and structural systems,

and represent Mechanical Engineering to key vendors and partners
- Drive improvements in quality, cost, manufacturability, and efficiency across the lifecycle, and lead root-cause analysis and corrective actions for prototype, production, and field issues
- Build, mentor, and grow a multi-level mechanical design organization, including engineers, senior ICs, and leads: hiring, onboarding, technical direction, capability building, and performance development
- Plan and allocate work across programs and product lines, balancing resources and priorities to meet portfolio commitments
- Own portfolio-level program delivery: budgets, costs, timelines, and milestones across multiple concurrent programs, driving accountability for on-time, on-cost outcomes
- Represent Mechanical Engineering in customer, partner, and leadership forums, translating technical positions into commitments and vice versa

Requirements

- Deep capability in aggregate calculations and first-principles problem-solving, with proven engineering judgment on complex, ambiguous problems at architecture level
- Expertise in CAD, preferably Solid Edge, with deep knowledge of GD&T;, tolerance stack-up analysis, and drawing standards
- Extensive hands-on experience designing primary structures, mechanisms, tools, jigs, and fixtures, with strong working knowledge of solid mechanics, load cases, and failure mechanisms
- Strong experience with mass-manufacturing processes such as sheet metal, machining, casting, injection moulding, stamping, extrusion, and welding, and proven capability designing for high-volume production with a wide range of materials while optimizing for cost, weight, durability, and strength
- Structural analysis and multibody dynamics experience, with a explicit understanding of tools such as Ansys and Adams, the ability to define correct inputs, and the judgment to interpret outputs accurately and challenge them

- Track record of mass-production component development and creation of engineering documentation such as BoMs, SOPs, release notes, and change records
- Experience partnering with reliability and quality teams to run FMEAs, execute design validation test plans, and bring subsystems and components into production
- Working knowledge of hardware IP strategy: patent landscape awareness, FTO thinking, design-around approaches, invention disclosure quality, and confidentiality discipline
- Demonstrated ability to build and lead multi-level engineering teams, including leading other leads or managers, and to develop standard work practices at a function level
- Strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to represent Mechanical Engineering to customers, partners, and executive stakeholders
- Familiarity with Design Thinking principles for innovation, ideation, and concept generation

Good to Have

- Experience leading mechanical engineering for electro-mechanical products across robotics, industrial automation, automotive, or similar high-precision hardware
- Experience owning supplier strategy, localization, and cost engineering for critical mechanical systems
- Knowledge of regulatory and safety standards applicable to industrial machinery and automated systems
- Certifications or formal training in Design Thinking
- Demonstrated habit of staying connected with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in mechanical design
- Named inventor on multiple granted patents or patent applications, and a demonstrated record of building IP portfolios

Eligible Candidates

- Bachelors or Masters in Mechanical Engineering (or Automotive, Aerospace) from a Tier 1 or Tier 2 institute
- 6 to 12 years of relevant industry experience covering the full product development cycle
- Minimum 3 years of technical leadership experience, including leading other leads or managers

We Value

- A leader who sets the technical bar and lifts the whole function
- Constant learner with drive to remain a hands-on Subject Matter Expert while scaling others
- Proven record in start-up environment working with innovations
- Ability to make and communicate decisions under time pressure with incomplete information
