Role summary

The Physician Assistant - Proctology supports a consultant proctologist or colorectal surgeon in the clinical and surgical management of anorectal and colorectal conditions. The role spans OPD assessment, pre
- and post-operative care, procedural assistance, and patient counselling in a hospital or dedicated proctology clinic setting across India.

Key responsibilities

OPD & assessment
- Take focused anorectal history and document presenting complaints (haemorrhoids, fissures, fistula, prolapse, constipation, rectal bleeding)
- Assist consultant during proctoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, and digital rectal examination (DRE)
- Coordinate colonoscopy scheduling and bowel prep counselling
- Triage urgent cases (rectal bleeding, incarcerated haemorrhoids, perianal abscess)

Pre-operative
- Conduct pre-op assessments and fitness documentation




- Obtain informed consent and explain procedures to patients
- Coordinate anaesthesia, OT scheduling, and pre-op investigations
- Prepare and educate patients on bowel prep protocols

Intra-operative & procedural assist
- First assist in haemorrhoidectomy, fistulotomy, lateral sphincterotomy, stapled haemorrhoidopexy (MIPH/PPH), and Seton placement
- Perform rubber band ligation (RBL) and sclerotherapy under supervision
- Assist in perianal abscess I&D; and wound packing
- Support laparoscopic colorectal procedures (port placement, retraction)

Post-operative & ward
- Manage post-op wound care, dressings, and sitz bath protocols
- Monitor for complications — bleeding, urinary retention, infection
- Conduct ward rounds and update case notes in HMS/EMR
- Advise on stoma care for colostomy / ileostomy patients

- Counsel patients on diet, fibre intake, and lifestyle modifications
