An Ophthalmic Technician assists ophthalmologists in delivering comprehensive eye care to patients. They are responsible for conducting diagnostic tests, maintaining medical records, and ensuring the smooth operation of a clinical setting. This role requires a combination of technical skills, patient interaction, and administrative duties to support eye care treatment plans and improve patient outcomes.

Ophthalmic Technician Responsibilities & Duties
- Performing diagnostic tests such as visual field testing and optical coherence tomography (OCT)
- Measuring and recording patients' visual acuity and eye pressure
- Assisting with minor surgical procedures and administering eye medications as directed by the ophthalmologist
- Preparing examination rooms and ensuring all equipment is sterilized and operational
- Collecting patient medical histories and preparing them for the ophthalmologist
- Educating patients about eye care, treatment plans, and medication usage
- Managing patient records and ensuring accurate data entry into medical software systems




- Performing contact lens evaluations and fittings
- Assisting in the fitting and adjusting of corrective eyewear
- Scheduling patient appointments and managing the daily calendar
- Managing inventory of medical supplies and ordering current stock as needed
- Collaborating with other healthcare providers to ensure comprehensive care for patients

Ophthalmic Technician Qualifications & Skills
- Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)
- Associate’s degree in a related field
- Experience in an ophthalmology or optometry setting
- Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) systems
- Knowledge of common ophthalmic diagnostic equipment
- Strong patient care and customer service skills
- Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities
- Basic understanding of medical terminology specific to ophthalmology
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of a certified ophthalmic technician
