Job Purpose To provide effective and safe nursing support during surgical procedures by maintaining strict aseptic techniques, preparing the Operation Theatre, arranging surgical instruments and supplies, assisting the surgical team during procedures, and ensuring patient safety and infection-control standards.

Key Responsibilities

- Prepare the Operation Theatre before each scheduled surgical procedure and ensure that all required equipment, instruments and supplies are available and functional.

- Check the availability and sterility of surgical instruments, linen, consumables, implants and other required OT materials.

- Perform appropriate surgical hand scrub, gowning and gloving procedures and maintain strict aseptic technique throughout the surgery.

- Arrange and prepare surgical instruments on the sterile trolley according to the planned procedure.

- Assist the surgeon by passing the required instruments, sutures, swabs and other surgical materials during the procedure.

- Maintain awareness of the surgical procedure and anticipate the surgeon's requirements wherever appropriate.

- Maintain the sterile field and immediately report any breach in aseptic technique.

- Conduct and document instrument, sponge, needle and swab counts before, during and after the procedure as per hospital protocol.

- Ensure that all used instruments are appropriately collected, segregated and sent for cleaning, decontamination and sterilization.

- Handle sterile supplies and surgical instruments appropriately to prevent contamination.

- Assist in maintaining proper specimen identification, labeling and secure transfer to the laboratory/pathology department.

- Ensure proper disposal and segregation of biomedical waste and sharps according to hospital protocols.

- Assist the surgical team during emergency procedures and respond promptly to urgent requirements.

- Coordinate with the Circulating Nurse, surgeons,



anesthetists and other OT staff to ensure smooth conduct of surgical procedures.

- Check and maintain OT equipment, surgical sets and emergency supplies and report any malfunction or shortage to the OT In-charge.

- Ensure proper preparation and positioning of the patient for surgery while maintaining privacy, dignity and safety.

- Assist in maintaining patient safety during transfer to and from the Operation Theatre.

- Follow infection prevention and control practices, including hand hygiene, PPE and sterilization protocols.

- Maintain accurate OT records, including procedure details, instrument counts, implant/consumable records and other required documentation.

- Participate in surgical safety checklists, including patient identification, procedure verification and site verification.

- Report any incident, medication error, instrument discrepancy, contamination or patient-safety concern immediately to the concerned authority.

- Maintain confidentiality of patient information and surgical records.

- Participate in OT audits, quality improvement activities, infection-control programs and staff training.

- Ensure the OT is properly cleaned, disinfected and prepared for the next procedure.

- Perform any other duties related to OT nursing and patient care assigned by the Nursing Superintendent, OT In-charge or authorized Management.

Patient Safety & Infection Control

- Strictly follow aseptic and sterile techniques.

- Follow the hospital's surgical safety checklist.

- Ensure correct patient, correct procedure and correct surgical site verification.

- Maintain accurate instrument, sponge, needle and swab counts.

- Follow biomedical waste and sharps disposal procedures.

- Report any contamination or breach of sterile technique immediately.

- Follow all infection prevention and control protocols.

- Maintain patient confidentiality and dignity.
