Role Overview::
The Purchase Manager will lead and manage procurement operations for heavy machinery manufacturing, ensuring timely availability of materials, cost competitiveness, and supplier quality excellence.
This is a hands-on leadership role requiring strong execution capability, deep supplier engagement, and close collaboration with production, engineering, quality, finance and marketing teams to support complex machine builds and growing production volumes.
Key Responsibilities::
1. Procurement Strategy & Execution
- Develop and execute purchasing strategies aligned with production plans, cost targets, and business objectives
- Ensure uninterrupted availability of raw materials, fabricated/machined parts, hydraulics, electricals, bought-out items, and services
- Translate production plans and MRP outputs into effective procurement actions
2. Strategic Sourcing & Negotiation
- Source, evaluate, and onboard domestic and international suppliers for critical and high-value components
- Lead RFQs, commercial negotiations, contract finalization, and payment term discussions
- Establish long-term supplier agreements to ensure price stability, quality, and delivery reliability
- Monitor commodity trends and mitigate cost escalation risk.
3. Supplier Management & Development
- Build and manage strong supplier relationships with a focus on performance and continuous improvement
- Conduct supplier evaluations and audits covering quality systems, capacity, process capability, and commercial strength
- Track supplier performance through KPIs: OTIF | PPM | Cost | Responsiveness | Capacity Readiness
- Drive NCR closure, CAPA implementation, and supplier development initiatives in coordination with Quality

• Inventory Coordination
- Work closely with production planning and stores teams using MRP/ERP systems (SAP or equivalent)
- Forecast material requirements and ensure timely procurement aligned with production schedules
- Support inventory optimization initiatives to reduce excess, obsolete, and slow-moving stock
5. Cost Control &
• Value Engineering
- Conduct detailed cost analysis, supplier benchmarking, and should-costing
- Drive cost reduction initiatives through:
- Alternate sourcing
- Localization
- Value engineering
- Process and logistics optimization
- Achieve annual procurement savings targets without compromising quality or delivery
6. Quality &
• Compliance
- Ensure all procured materials meet engineering specifications, quality standards, and statutory requirements
- Coordinate with Quality and Engineering on incoming quality issues, supplier audits, and corrective actions
- Ensure adherence to company policies, ethical sourcing practices, and audit requirements
7. Documentation, MIS &
• Governance
- Maintain accurate purchasing documentation including POs, contracts, rate agreements, and supplier records
- Prepare and review procurement MIS covering: Cost Savings | Supplier Performance | Delivery Adherence | Risks
- Ensure ERP data accuracy for material masters, pricing, and supplier information
8. Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with Engineering for:
- New Product Development (NPD)
- Prototype sourcing
- Alternate materials and localization initiatives
- Work closely with Production, Finance, Quality, and Logistics to ensure seamless procurement execution
10. Import Sourcing & Regulatory Compliance (If Applicable)
- Manage import procurement activities including lead time planning, vendor coordination, and documentation
- Ensure compliance with customs regulations, HS codes, duties, and applicable statutory norms

Payment & MSME Compliance
- Coordinate with Finance on vendor payment cycles, credit period optimisation, and cash-flow planning
- Ensure compliance with MSME Act requirements and timely resolution of vendor payment issues
10. Risk Management & Business Continuity
- Identify single-vendor dependency risks and develop alternate sourcing strategies
- Prepare contingency procurement plans for supply disruptions, shortages, logistics delays, or vendor failures
- Lead, mentor, and review procurement team members, defining clear delegation and escalation mechanisms
- Own procurement performance outcomes including production stoppages due to material non-availability, PPV, inventory turns, and supplier rejection costs
Experience::
- 10–12 years of experience in purchasing/procurement within heavy machinery, automotive, or industrial manufacturing
- Strong exposure to complex BOMs, fabricated and machined components, and production-linked procurement
- Hands-on experience working with ERP/MRP-driven environments
