Naval Architect – Maritime Engineering & AI
Location: Remote
Experience: 2–5 years
Employment: Full-time
Industry: Naval Architecture | Maritime Engineering | Shipbuilding | Maritime Technology
About Navirego
Navirego is a maritime engineering and AI technology company focused on making ships and maritime operations safer, smarter and more efficient.
We work at the intersection of Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Maritime Operations and Artificial Intelligence , supporting shipowners, ship managers, shipyards and other maritime stakeholders across the vessel lifecycle.
Our work spans conventional maritime engineering—including ship design, retrofits, conversions, technical assessments and engineering documentation—as well as the development and application of AI and digital technologies for maritime operations, inspections, compliance and engineering workflows .
We are a growing, entrepreneurial team working internationally, giving team members the opportunity to work directly with founders, experienced maritime professionals and end customers.
The Role
We are looking for a Naval Architect with 2–5 years of professional experience who is interested in working beyond the boundaries of a conventional design-office role.
The successful candidate will work across multiple maritime engineering projects, including vessel retrofits, conversions, advanced engineering studies, technical documentation and manuals , while also contributing to the application of AI and emerging technologies in Naval Architecture and commercial ship operations .
This is a highly hands-on role with significant exposure to real customer problems. You will work closely with Navirego's founders, engineering partners and customers and will have the opportunity to take ownership of projects from understanding the requirement through engineering and final delivery.
Key Responsibilities
You will be involved in areas including:
- Naval architecture and marine engineering projects involving existing vessels, retrofits, modifications and conversions
- Preparation and review of technical drawings, calculations, specifications and engineering documentation
- Vessel design and advanced engineering studies
- Technical assessment of existing ships and proposed modifications
- Preparation of technical manuals, procedures, reports and supporting documentation
- Review and interpretation of class rules, statutory regulations and maritime technical requirements
- Coordination with shipowners, ship managers, shipyards, classification societies, equipment suppliers and other stakeholders
- Supporting project planning,
technical discussions and customer presentations
- Reviewing vessel drawings, manuals, specifications, inspection information and other technical documentation
- Translating customer operational and engineering requirements into practical technical solutions
- Working with Navirego's technology team to explore and develop AI applications for Naval Architecture, ship engineering and vessel operations
- Helping structure maritime engineering knowledge, rules, drawings and technical data so that these can be effectively used within AI-enabled workflows
- Participating directly in customer meetings, technical discussions, demonstrations and project reviews
The exact mix of responsibilities will vary by project. We are looking for someone who enjoys this variety rather than someone seeking a narrowly defined engineering role.
What We Are Looking For
Essential
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Marine Engineering or a closely related discipline
- 2–5 years of relevant professional experience
- Practical understanding of ship design and/or ship engineering
- Experience with vessel modifications, retrofits, conversions or engineering projects will be highly valued
- Ability to understand and work with vessel drawings, specifications, technical manuals and engineering documentation
- Familiarity with maritime statutory and classification requirements
- Strong analytical and problem-solving ability
- Fluent written and spoken English
- Ability to communicate confidently with customers and technical stakeholders
- Comfortable working independently in a remote, fast-moving environment
- Curiosity and willingness to work with recent technologies, particularly AI and digital maritime applications
Good to Have Experience in one or more of the following would be an advantage:
Ship design & engineering: General Arrangement, stability, structural design/calculations, machinery arrangements, piping, safety plans, deck systems or production engineering.
Retrofit & conversion: Equipment retrofits, vessel modifications, conversions, life-extension projects, energy-efficiency modifications or regulatory upgrades.
Engineering tools: AutoCAD and/or relevant naval architecture, 3D modelling,
stability, structural or engineering analysis software.
Regulatory knowledge: IMO conventions, SOLAS, MARPOL, Load Line requirements, class rules and flag requirements.
Digital maritime: Data analytics, automation, programming, digital twins, AI/ML, Generative AI or other maritime digitalisation initiatives.
Candidates are not expected to be AI specialists or software developers . We are particularly interested in naval architects who understand maritime engineering deeply and are excited about learning how AI can augment engineering work.
Why Join Navirego?
This is an opportunity to build a different kind of career in maritime engineering.
Rather than working on one narrow part of a large engineering programme, you will have exposure to multiple vessels, customers, engineering challenges and technologies .
You will
- Work directly with the founders and senior maritime professionals
- Have substantial end-customer interaction
- Take ownership of real engineering projects
- Work across retrofits, conversions, advanced engineering and maritime operations
- Gain exposure to international maritime customers and projects
- Work at the intersection of traditional Naval Architecture and emerging AI technology
- Help shape new AI applications for Naval Architecture and commercial shipping
- Join a growing startup where valuable ideas can move quickly from concept to actual implementation
- Work remotely with a high degree of responsibility and autonomy
For someone who wants to combine a strong foundation in Naval Architecture with the future of maritime technology , this role offers an unusual opportunity to do both. The Person We Think Will Thrive Here
We are looking for someone who is technically strong but also curious, adaptable and willing to take ownership .
You should be comfortable moving from an engineering calculation or drawing review to a customer discussion, and from preparing a technical document to brainstorming with our technology team about how an AI system could solve the same problem differently.
We value engineering judgement, willingness to learn and the ability to get things done more than an exact match against every item in this .
Interested?
If this sounds like you—or you know a Naval Architect whom you can strongly recommend —we would be very happy to connect.
Please share your CV/resume along with a brief introduction highlighting your relevant naval architecture and maritime engineering experience .
