Mechanical Engineer – Fabrication & Steel Structures

Position: Mechanical Engineer

Department: Production / Fabrication

Reporting To: Company Owner

1. Job Purpose

We are looking for a technically competent and result-oriented Mechanical Engineer to manage and supervise day-to-day production activities in a steel structure and fabrication plant. The candidate will be responsible for production planning, fabrication activities, manpower coordination, welding operations, quality control, productivity improvement, and timely completion of structural steel fabrication projects as per approved drawings and specifications.

1. Key ResponsibilitiesA. Production & Fabrication

- Plan, coordinate, and supervise day-to-day steel fabrication activities.
- Ensure production targets are achieved within the planned schedule.
- Supervise fabrication of columns, beams, trusses, platforms, ladders, handrails, supports, frames and other structural components.
- Ensure proper cutting, fit-up, drilling, welding, grinding, straightening and finishing operations.
- Monitor material utilization and minimize fabrication wastage.
- Coordinate material movement from stores to the fabrication shop.

B. Drawing & Technical Activities
- Read and interpret structural fabrication drawings, GA drawings, shop drawings and BOM/MTO.
- Ensure fabrication is carried out strictly as per approved drawings and specifications.
- Check dimensions, levels, alignment, hole positions and weld details.
- Coordinate with the Design/Engineering team for drawing-related issues and technical clarifications.
- Prepare or verify cutting lists, fabrication plans and material requirements.

C. Welding & Fabrication Control
- Supervise MIG/MAG, SMAW/ARC and other applicable welding processes.
- Ensure correct welding procedures, electrode/consumable usage and weld quality.
- Monitor weld distortion and dimensional accuracy.
- Coordinate with the Welding Inspector/QC team for inspection and rectification.
- Ensure proper pre-fabrication and post-fabrication inspection.

D. Quality Control
- Ensure fabrication complies with approved drawings, specifications and applicable standards.




- Conduct dimensional and visual inspections at different stages of fabrication.
- Identify defects and coordinate corrective/preventive actions.
- Maintain inspection reports, rejection/rework records and production documentation.
- Coordinate with NDT personnel for UT, MPI, DPT or other required inspections.

E. Manpower & Shop-Floor Supervision
- Supervise welders, fitters, fabricators, gas cutters, helpers and other shop-floor personnel.
- Allocate manpower according to production priorities.
- Monitor worker productivity and discipline.
- Train and guide workers on proper fabrication practices.
- Coordinate with subcontractors wherever applicable.

F. Production Planning & Reporting
- Prepare daily/weekly production plans.
- Monitor actual production against planned targets.
- Maintain daily production and progress reports.
- Identify bottlenecks and take corrective action to improve productivity.
- Coordinate with procurement, stores, QC, dispatch and project teams.

G. Maintenance & Safety
- Coordinate with maintenance personnel for proper functioning of fabrication machinery.
- Ensure regular inspection and maintenance of welding machines, cutting machines, cranes, compressors, drilling machines and other equipment.
- Ensure compliance with PPE, work-at-height, lifting, hot-work and general industrial safety requirements.
- Report unsafe conditions and take corrective action immediately.

1. Educational Qualification

- B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized institution.
- Diploma in Mechanical Engineering with substantial relevant experience may also be considered.

1. Experience

Preferred: 1-2 years of experience in:

- Structural steel fabrication
- Steel structure manufacturing
- Industrial fabrication
- Heavy fabrication
- PEB/steel building fabrication
- Equipment/skid fabrication
- EPC/project fabrication

Candidates with experience in a steel fabrication workshop/plant will be preferred.

1. Required Technical Skills





- Strong knowledge of steel fabrication processes.
- Positive knowledge of welding and fit-up procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret fabrication and structural drawings.
- Knowledge of cutting, drilling, bending, welding and grinding processes.
- Understanding of welding symbols and weld joints.
- Knowledge of material grades such as MS/IS 2062 and commonly used structural steel sections.
- Knowledge of dimensional inspection and fabrication tolerances.
- Basic knowledge of NDT methods such as DPT, MPI and UT.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD is preferred.
- Knowledge of MS Excel and production reporting.
- Knowledge of relevant IS/ASTM/AWS standards will be an advantage.

1. Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

The selected candidate will be evaluated on:
- Achievement of daily/monthly production targets.
- Fabrication productivity and manpower utilization.
- Reduction in material wastage.
- Reduction in rejection and rework.
- Quality and dimensional accuracy of fabricated structures.
- Timely completion of production orders.
- Equipment utilization and downtime reduction.
- Compliance with safety requirements.
- Effective manpower and shop-floor management.

1. Salary & Benefits

Salary: ₹[2,40,000] per annum, depending on qualification and relevant experience. Other benefits as per company policy, including applicable statutory benefits and performance incentives.
