Business Analyst/Product Owner Maritime AI Platform (Ship Management)

About the Role

Synergy Marine Group is looking for a Business Analyst/Product Owner to join the Maritime AI Platform Technology team supporting the design, enhancement, and rollout of the Maritime AI Platform a comprehensive digital platform for ship management operations covering the full lifecycle of vessel technical, marine, crewing, procurement, and compliance activities. The role is central to translating operational requirements from Technical Superintendents, Fleet Managers, Marine Superintendents, and shore/vessel teams into clear, actionable specifications for the product and engineering teams building the platform's modules.

About the Maritime AI Platform The Maritime AI Platform is Synergy's ship management digital platform spanning modules including: Planned Maintenance System (PMS), Survey & Class Certification Monitoring, Purchase/Budget/Expense Management, Defect & Inspection Management (PSC, SIRE/CDI, VIR, Internal Audits, TMSA), Crew Planning & Rotation, IHM, LSA/FFA Compliance, Dry Docking Planning, Voyage Monitoring, Fuel/Lube Oil Analysis, CII/EEOI/FuelEU compliance, BWT/CWT Monitoring, and Technical Forms/Reporting used across a large multi-vessel fleet by shore-based ship management teams.

Key Responsibilities

- Act as the primary liaison between ship management stakeholders (Technical Superintendents, Fleet Managers, Marine Superintendents, Crew Coordinators, Purchase/QHSE teams) and the product and engineering teams building the Maritime AI Platform.
- Gather, document, and validate business requirements across platform modules including PMS,



survey/class certification, defect and inspection management (PSC/SIRE/CDI/VIR), purchase and budget management, crew planning, IHM, and voyage/compliance reporting.
- Translate operational and regulatory requirements into user stories, workflow logic, validation rules, and acceptance criteria for development sprints.
- Define and implement data validation and quality checks to improve accuracy and reduce manual effort across fleet operational data.
- Support UAT (User Acceptance Testing) cycles, coordinate issue triage, and clarify business rules with engineering during defect resolution.
- Analyze operational data (maintenance jobs, survey/certificate status, defects, purchase requisitions, crew contracts, voyage/compliance metrics) to identify process gaps and propose workflow improvements.
- Prepare functional specification documents, process flow diagrams, and status reports/dashboards for management on ongoing platform enhancements.
- Mentor junior analysts/associates and support smooth knowledge transfer and onboarding within the team.
- Stay current with ship management operational practices and regulatory requirements (IMO, class society, flag state) and assess their impact on relevant platform modules.





Required Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline.
- Minimum 4 years of experience in ship management operations, maritime digital transformation, or business analysis roles within the shipping/maritime industry.
- Working knowledge of ship management functions planned maintenance, survey/class certification, PSC/vetting inspections, procurement, crew management, and/or regulatory compliance.
- Demonstrated experience gathering and documenting business/functional requirements and writing user stories/acceptance criteria for software development teams.
- Robust data analysis skills — Advanced Excel required; working knowledge of Python, preferred.
- Experience with data validation, exception handling, and reporting standardization across fleet-level systems.
- Excellent stakeholder management and cross-functional communication skills — ability to work with vessel crew, shore technical/marine teams, product managers, and engineers.
- Prior sea-going or ship management background strongly preferred.

Preferred / Nice-to-Have
- Exposure to multiple ship management functions (technical, marine, crewing, procurement) rather than a single specialization.
- Experience mentoring or onboarding junior team members.
