Role: L2 Network Engineer

Function: Network Operations & Support (Switching / LAN Infrastructure)

Engagement: AMC — managed maintenance, administration, monitoring & support of L2/L3 switches

Location / Site: School Campus, Noida (onsite presence required as per SLA)

Experience: 3–6 years in enterprise/campus network switching support

Reporting To: Network Team Lead / Service Delivery Manager

Role Summary The L2 Network Engineer is responsible for the day-to-day operation, administration, monitoring, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the campus L2 and L3 network switching infrastructure delivered under an Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC). The engineer ensures the availability, reliability, security, and optimal performance of the switching environment, resolves incidents within agreed SLAs, coordinates with OEMs for hardware faults/RMA, and provides both remote and onsite support to keep network operations uninterrupted. This is a hands-on, multi-vendor role covering Juniper, Aruba, Cisco, HPE, Huawei and Netgear switches across core and access layers.

Key Responsibilities

Switch Operations, Administration & Security

- Configure, re-configure, and optimize L2 and L3 switches across the campus.
- Create, modify, and delete VLANs; manage user access ports and network connectivity requirements.
- Configure Switch Virtual Interfaces (SVI), virtual ports, trunk ports, port channels, and link aggregation.
- Configure and maintain Layer-3 routing services.
- Configure and manage High Availability (HA) — switch stacking, virtual chassis, HSRP, VRRP, or equivalent technologies.
- Perform periodic security scanning of all switches (L2 & L3) and remediate identified vulnerabilities in a timely manner.

Monitoring & Preventive Maintenance
- Continuously monitor and administer network switches.
- Conduct monthly health checks covering hardware status, CPU and memory utilization, power supplies, fans, uplinks, interfaces, and system logs.
- Perform preventive maintenance to ensure optimum performance and availability.
- Take and maintain configuration backups; perform restoration when required.
- Support firmware/software review and upgrades, wherever applicable and approved by the client.

Fault Management & Troubleshooting
- Diagnose and resolve switch-related hardware, software, configuration, and connectivity issues.
- Troubleshoot VLAN, routing, uplink, trunk, port channel, and network performance issues.
- Perform Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and recommend corrective actions for major incidents.

- Troubleshoot LAN connectivity issues affecting end users, printers, servers, wireless devices, IP CCTV, biometric systems, and other IoT/network-connected devices.

LAN & Fiber Connectivity Support
- Test and troubleshoot LAN and fiber connectivity.
- Identify faulty cables, patch cords, I/O points, patch panels, and switch ports.
- Verify network point connectivity and cable continuity.
- Coordinate with designated cabling service providers to rectify physical cabling faults.

OEM Coordination & RMA Support
- Log and manage complaints with OEMs for faulty switches and hardware components.
- Coordinate with OEM support teams for diagnosis, troubleshooting, and replacement.
- Initiate, track, and close RMA (Return Material Authorization) cases.
- Install, configure, and test replacement hardware, including bringing up affected networks using standby switches.

Remote & Onsite Support
- Provide remote support via phone, email, remote access tools, or ticketing systems.
- Support configuration changes, troubleshooting, and incident resolution.
- Provide on-demand remote assistance during business hours and emergency support for critical incidents.
- Conduct at least one preventive maintenance visit per month for physical inspection and health verification of all switches.
- Visit the client campus whenever a switch is inaccessible remotely, network services are disrupted, or physical intervention is required — and remain onsite until normal operations are restored.

Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain updated switch configurations and network documentation.
- Prepare and submit monthly service reports covering health-check status, incidents handled, configuration changes, OEM/RMA status, and recommendations/observations.
- Maintain incident and RCA reports for major outages and configuration backup records.

Service Level Expectations (SLA)

- Critical switches (L3 core & hub-room uplink): respond within 15 minutes and resolve remotely within 1 hour; if not remotely accessible, visit within 1 hour and resolve within 2 hours.
- Non-critical switches (hub-room basic L2/L3):

respond within 30 minutes and resolve remotely within 2 hours; if not remotely accessible, visit within 2 hours and resolve within 3 hours.
- For faulty switches, replace with the standby switch and configure it to restore the affected network; log the RMA/call and coordinate with the partner/OEM.

Required Technical Skills

- Strong hands-on experience configuring and troubleshooting enterprise L2/L3 switches in a campus/LAN setting.
- Practical, multi-vendor exposure to Juniper (EX-2300 / EX-4200 / EX-4300), Aruba, Cisco, HPE, Huawei and Netgear switches (managed and unmanaged).
- Solid working knowledge of VLANs, trunking, STP/RSTP, link aggregation (LACP), SVIs, and port channels.
- Layer-3 routing fundamentals (static and agile routing) and first-hop redundancy (HSRP / VRRP).
- Switch stacking / virtual chassis and other High Availability configurations.
- Switch security hardening and vulnerability scanning/remediation.
- Structured cabling awareness — fiber and copper LAN, patch panels, I/O points, and cable fault isolation.
- Familiarity with monitoring tools, configuration backup/restore, and firmware upgrade practices.
- Experience with OEM/RMA processes and coordinating vendor hardware replacements.
- Comfortable troubleshooting connectivity for end-user devices, IP CCTV, biometric and IoT endpoints.

Qualifications & Certifications
- Diploma / Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, Electronics, Telecommunications, or a related field.
- 3–6 years of relevant experience in network switching support/AMC operations.
- Preferred certifications: CCNA / JNCIA / Aruba ACSA (or equivalent); higher certifications (CCNP / JNCIS) are an advantage.

Soft Skills & Attributes
- Strong analytical and problem-solving ability with an SLA-driven, ownership mindset.
- Clear written and verbal communication for reporting, coordination, and RCA documentation.
- Ability to work independently onsite and coordinate with OEMs, cabling vendors, and client stakeholders.
- Willingness to provide onsite support and respond to critical/emergency incidents as required.
- Attention to detail in documentation, configuration management, and change control.

Working Conditions

- Primarily onsite at the school campus in Noida, with remote support responsibilities.
- Availability for emergency/critical-incident support outside standard business hours as per SLA.
- At least one scheduled preventive maintenance visit per month, plus onsite visits on demand.
