Position: Head of the Department (HOD) – English

Reporting To: Principal / Dean / Director / Management

Job Summary The Head of the Department – English will be responsible for providing academic leadership and effective administration of the English Department. The HOD will oversee teaching, faculty coordination, syllabus planning and completion, student mentoring, academic quality, research, and departmental activities in accordance with the academic standards and policies of Harsha Institutions.

Key Responsibilities1. Academic Leadership

- Plan, coordinate, and monitor the overall academic activities of the English Department.
- Ensure effective implementation of the prescribed curriculum and academic calendar.
- Prepare and monitor the departmental teaching plan and syllabus completion schedule.
- Ensure timely completion of the syllabus by all faculty members.
- Review lesson plans, teaching materials, assignments, and assessment methods.
- Monitor the quality and effectiveness of classroom teaching.
- Identify academic gaps and take corrective measures wherever required.

1. Faculty Management & Workload

- Allocate subjects, classes, and teaching workload among faculty members appropriately.
- Prepare and monitor the department timetable and class allotments.
- Ensure balanced workload distribution among faculty.
- Monitor faculty attendance, punctuality, leave, and academic responsibilities.
- Conduct regular departmental meetings and communicate Management / Principal instructions to faculty members.
- Mentor and guide faculty members in improving teaching quality and academic performance.
- Identify faculty development requirements and recommend training programmes.

1. Student Development

- Monitor students' academic performance and attendance.
- Guide faculty members in providing appropriate mentoring and academic support to students.
- Encourage students to improve their communication, writing, presentation, and language skills.
- Organize activities such as debates, elocution, essay writing, public speaking, group discussions, literary activities, seminars, workshops, and language development programmes.
- Address academic concerns raised by students and coordinate with the Principal / Management whenever required.

1. Assessment & Examination

- Coordinate internal assessments,



assignments, tests, and other academic evaluations.
- Ensure timely submission and verification of internal assessment marks.
- Monitor question paper preparation and evaluation as per institutional and university guidelines.
- Ensure proper maintenance of academic and examination records.
- Support examination-related duties assigned by the Institution.

1. Research & Academic Development

- Encourage faculty members to undertake research and publish papers in reputed journals.
- Promote participation in conferences, seminars, workshops, FDPs, and other academic programmes.
- Encourage faculty to develop innovative teaching methodologies and academic resources.
- Support departmental research projects and collaborations.
- Maintain records of faculty research publications, conferences, FDPs, and other academic achievements.

1. Department Administration

- Maintain proper departmental records, files, reports, and documentation.
- Prepare departmental reports as required by the Principal / Dean / Management.
- Ensure proper utilization and maintenance of departmental resources.
- Coordinate with other departments for interdisciplinary academic activities.
- Ensure compliance with institutional policies, academic regulations, and university requirements.
- Handle departmental responsibilities assigned by the Principal / Dean / Management.

1. Curriculum & Academic Planning

- Review curriculum requirements and suggest improvements wherever appropriate.
- Plan academic activities in accordance with the university and institutional academic calendar.
- Ensure that all faculty members maintain appropriate teaching documentation.
- Monitor syllabus progress through regular reviews and obtain updates from faculty members.
- Take necessary steps to ensure that academic targets are achieved within the stipulated timelines.

1. Institutional Responsibilities

- Represent the English Department in academic and institutional meetings.
- Coordinate with the Principal, Dean,



other HODs, faculty members, and administration.
- Participate actively in institutional events, seminars, workshops, orientation programmes, and other activities.
- Support student admissions, orientation, and institutional promotional activities whenever assigned.
- Maintain professional discipline and ensure that departmental staff adhere to the rules and regulations of Harsha Institutions.
- Carry out any other academic or administrative responsibilities assigned by the Management from time to time.

Qualifications
- Master’s Degree in English / English Literature or a relevant discipline from a recognized university.
- NET / SLET / SET / Ph.D. as applicable and in accordance with prevailing UGC / University norms.
- Minimum relevant teaching experience as per the requirements of the Institution / University.
- Previous experience as HOD / Coordinator / senior faculty member will be preferred.

Pay: ₹30,000.00 - ₹50,000.00 per month
