Data Journalist - Policy & Economy | Location: New Delhi
About the Role
We are looking for a curious and analytical Data Journalist - Policy & Economy who can turn complex economic, government, and policy data into compelling stories that inform and engage our audience.
The ideal candidate combines strong journalistic instincts with data-analysis skills and an understanding of how government policy, economic trends, public finance, businesses, stakeholders and citizens intersect.
You will be required to identify stories hidden in datasets, analyse government and economic data, track the impact of policies on industries and other stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Identify and develop data-driven stories on the economy, public policy, government programmes, and their impact on citizens and businesses.
- Track and analyse key economic indicators beyond the macro data related to GDP, inflation, interest rates and credit and look at other key sectors including employment, wages, consumption, investment, trade, industrial production, fiscal deficit, government spending, taxation, and public debt.
- Analyse government budgets, expenditure data, policy announcements, parliamentary data, regulatory changes, and government schemes to identify trends and newsworthy insights.
- Examine the implementation and outcomes of public policies and government programmes using available datasets and independent research.
- Analyse datasets from government departments, regulators, statistical agencies,
international institutions, research organisations, and other credible sources.
- Conduct rigorous fact-checking, source verification, and methodological checks before publication.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Mass Communication, Economics, Statistics, Data Science, Public Policy, or a related discipline.
- 2–5 years of experience in journalism, data journalism, economic reporting, policy research, analytics, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of journalistic principles, reporting, fact-checking, source evaluation, and editorial standards.
- Strong interest in economics, public policy, government data, and current affairs.
- Ability to work with large and messy datasets and extract meaningful insights.
- Valuable understanding of basic statistics, including averages, distributions, percentages, growth rates, correlation, sampling, and statistical significance.
- Excellent research, writing, and communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to work under tight newsroom deadlines.
Experience working with government, economic, business or policy datasets is preferred. Candidates from digital-first and new-generation media organisations will be particularly valued.
The right candidate doesn’t just ask, “What do the numbers say?” but “What is hidden in the numbers, why does it matter, and what story can we uncover from it?”
