Position: Assistant Nursing Superintendent

Department: Nursing

Location: Women & Children Hospital

Reporting To: Nursing Superintendent / Director – Nursing / Hospital Administration

1. Job Summary

The Assistant Nursing Superintendent (ANS) is responsible for assisting the Nursing Superintendent in the overall administration and supervision of nursing services. The position ensures safe, compassionate, and quality nursing care for women, newborns, children, and their attendants while maintaining hospital policies, clinical standards, infection-control practices, and patient-safety requirements.
1. Key Roles & ResponsibilitiesA. Nursing Administration

- Assist the Nursing Superintendent in the day-to-day management of nursing services.
- Supervise nursing activities across wards, NICU, PICU, pediatric wards, maternity wards, labour room, OT, emergency and other assigned clinical areas.
- Ensure adequate nursing staff availability in all shifts.
- Prepare, review and implement nursing duty rosters and staff deployment.
- Monitor attendance, punctuality, leave and staff discipline.
- Conduct regular rounds of all assigned nursing areas.
- Ensure proper shift handover and continuity of patient care.
- Review nursing reports and escalate important issues to the Nursing Superintendent.

B. Patient Care & Safety
- Ensure safe, effective and compassionate nursing care to all patients.
- Monitor compliance with nursing protocols, clinical procedures and hospital policies.
- Ensure timely administration of medications and treatments as prescribed.
- Monitor nursing documentation, patient charts, medication records and nursing notes.
- Ensure proper identification of patients, especially newborns and pediatric patients.
- Promote patient and attendant education regarding treatment, medication, hygiene and discharge instructions.
- Attend to patient/attendant complaints and coordinate appropriate resolution.

C. Women & Children Care
- Supervise nursing care for antenatal, postnatal, gynecology and maternity patients.
- Ensure appropriate nursing support during labour and delivery.
- Coordinate nursing services in NICU, PICU and pediatric units.
- Ensure age-appropriate and safe care for infants and children.
- Monitor newborn identification, feeding, temperature maintenance and infection-prevention practices.
- Ensure proper support for mothers and attendants regarding breastfeeding and newborn care.




- Coordinate with pediatricians, obstetricians, neonatologists and other clinical teams for continuity of care.

D. Staffing & Team Management
- Allocate nursing staff according to patient workload and clinical requirements.
- Guide Nursing In-charges, Staff Nurses and other nursing personnel.
- Monitor staff performance and provide constructive feedback.
- Identify training requirements and coordinate nursing education programmes.
- Support orientation and induction of newly joined nursing staff.
- Counsel staff regarding discipline, professional conduct and patient-care standards.
- Assist in performance appraisal of nursing staff.

E. Infection Control & Quality
- Ensure compliance with infection-control policies and standard precautions.
- Monitor hand hygiene, PPE use, biomedical waste segregation and environmental cleanliness.
- Participate in nursing audits, quality audits and accreditation activities.
- Monitor nursing quality indicators and implement corrective actions.
- Report and assist in investigation of incidents, medication errors, falls and other patient-safety events.
- Promote continuous improvement in nursing practices.

F. Equipment, Drugs & Supplies
- Ensure availability and proper maintenance of essential nursing equipment.
- Regularly check emergency equipment, oxygen supply, suction machines, monitors and other lifesaving equipment.
- Monitor availability of medicines, consumables, linen and nursing supplies.
- Ensure proper storage and handling of medications and supplies.
- Report shortages, damaged equipment and maintenance requirements promptly.

G. Emergency & Critical Care Coordination
- Support nursing teams during medical and clinical emergencies.
- Ensure emergency trolleys and lifesaving equipment are checked and ready for use.
- Coordinate nursing support during emergency situations, codes and critical procedures.
- Ensure adequate staffing during high-risk cases and peak workload periods.

H. Documentation & Reporting
- Ensure accurate and timely maintenance of nursing registers and records.




- Review daily nursing reports, incident reports and shift reports.
- Prepare periodic nursing reports for submission to the Nursing Superintendent.
- Maintain records related to staffing, attendance, training, audits and nursing activities.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient and employee information.

I. Coordination
- Coordinate with doctors, Nursing Superintendent, HR, Administration, Pharmacy, Laboratory, OT, Infection Control and other departments.
- Facilitate smooth communication between nursing staff and other hospital departments.
- Support hospital management in implementing nursing-related policies and instructions.

1. Qualifications

- B.Sc. Nursing / Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing / GNM from a recognized institution.
- Valid registration with the State Nursing Council.
- Additional qualification in Nursing Administration/Management is desirable.

1. Experience

- Preferably 5+ years of relevant nursing experience, including supervisory/leadership experience.
- Experience in a Women & Children Hospital, maternity hospital, pediatric hospital or multispecialty hospital is preferred.

1. Authority & Accountability

The Assistant Nursing Superintendent is accountable for the effective functioning of assigned nursing areas and is responsible for escalating significant clinical, staffing, disciplinary and patient-safety issues to the Nursing Superintendent/appropriate authority without delay. Pay: From ₹40,000.00 per month
