Job overview
We are seeking an experienced Tool Room Engineer to support the design, development, maintenance, repair, and continuous improvement of production tooling in a general manufacturing environment.
The successful candidate will work closely with production, quality, maintenance, procurement, and external suppliers to ensure tooling is safe, reliable, accurate, and available when required.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, modify, and maintain tools, jigs, fixtures, dies, moulds, and other production tooling.
- Review engineering drawings, specifications, tolerances, and GD&T; requirements.
- Coordinate the manufacture, repair, refurbishment, and modification of tooling.
- Support the commissioning, validation, and release of new or modified tools.
- Troubleshoot tooling problems on the shop floor and implement effective corrective actions.
- Investigate tool wear, downtime, quality issues, and recurring failures.
- Maintain preventive-maintenance schedules, inspection standards, and tool history records.
- Improve tool life, dimensional accuracy, cycle time, and process stability.
- Liaise with internal departments and external toolmakers or suppliers.
- Support cost-reduction, standardisation, design-for-manufacture, and continuous-improvement projects.
- Promote compliance with company safety, quality, and environmental requirements.
Qualifications and skills
- Degree, diploma, apprenticeship, or equivalent technical qualification in mechanical engineering, tool engineering, manufacturing engineering, or a related field.
- At least 7 years of relevant experience in a tool room, tooling engineering, or production engineering environment.
- Strong practical knowledge of machining, fitting, fabrication, materials, tolerances, and manufacturing processes.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
- Experience using CAD systems and preparing engineering documentation.
- Knowledge of CAM, CNC machining, moulds, dies, jigs, or fixtures is an advantage.
- Demonstrated experience diagnosing tooling failures and implementing lasting solutions.
- Strong problem-solving, planning, communication, and root-cause-analysis skills.
- Hands-on, safety-conscious, quality-focused, and able to work independently.
