Our commitment to innovation and excellence has established HeadSpin as a trusted partner for organizations seeking reliable and scalable solutions for mobile app quality assurance and performance monitoring.
About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled System Software Engineer with extensive expertise in systems and networking to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and maintaining the core infrastructure that connects HeadSpin's platform to physical iOS and Android devices. Your work will be crucial in enabling real-device automation, remote debugging, and telemetry collection at scale.
You will own and enhance protocols, daemons, and communication layers, ensuring seamless and reliable device connectivity across diverse platforms. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of systems programming, network protocols, and mobile device internals, contributing to a product that impacts the global mobile ecosystem.
Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess over five years of experience in systems-level software engineering, with a strong background in networking and device communication protocols. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and Go is essential, along with hands-on experience with POSIX systems programming,
including sockets, process management, and multithreading. A deep understanding of network protocols like TCP/UDP, QUIC, TLS 1.3, HTTP/2, HTTP/3, and WebSocket is required.
Candidates should have experience debugging with low-level tools such as lldb, dtrace, and Wireshark, and possess a solid grasp of OS internals and networking fundamentals, including the OSI model and device-specific protocols. Familiarity with developing REST APIs, WebSockets, RPC/gRPC protocols, and WebRTC is also highly desirable. A proactive learner with excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to evolving platform requirements will thrive in this role.
Responsibilities
As a System Software Engineer at HeadSpin, your key responsibilities will include designing, developing, and maintaining the device connectivity stack, including USB and network-based device sessions utilizing frameworks such as usbmuxd, remoted, and Apple's CoreDevice/RemoteXPC. You will build and extend low-level communication layers that interface with iOS internals, including lockdownd, DTServiceHub, and XPC services, ensuring reliable device interactions. Developing system-level daemons and services on Linux and macOS to handle device multiplexing, session management, and protocol translation will be a core part of your role.
You will work with various transport protocols such as TCP, QUIC, HTTP/2, WebSocket, and RPC to implement high-reliability device tunneling solutions. Collaboration with platform and product teams to expose device capabilities—such as screenshots, logs,
crash reports, and network HAR capture—will be essential, ensuring these features operate with low latency and high reliability. Additionally, you will stay abreast of Apple's evolving device communication models, adapting the platform as needed to support new protocols and frameworks introduced in recent iOS versions.
