About the Project
We are supporting the controls integration effort for an automated Cannula Sub Assembly machine, functioning as an extension of the client's engineering team for the duration of the engagement. The machine is a stand-alone automated assembly system built around a substantial robotics and motion-control footprint, reflecting a high-complexity, multi-station automation cell rather than a single-purpose robotic tool.
The automation architecture includes multiple ABB robots, a substantial bank of linear servo axes, and numerous VFDs, coordinated with a mix of conveyors and indexers for product transport and positioning, pneumatic slides for discrete actuation, and a full sensing layer of discrete sensors, IO-Link sensors, and Ethernet-connected devices for diagnostics and status feedback. The cell is enclosed within an interlocked safety system comprising E-stops, safety-rated door sensors, and interlocked guarding, consistent with a fully automated production environment.
We are engaging a Senior ABB Robotics / Robot Controls Engineer to independently execute the robot programming and robot/PLC integration scope for assigned robotic stations, working from the client's proposal package, electrical schematics, mechanical CAD, and established programming templates as the governing engineering basis.
Role Overview
This is a robotics-focused engineering role, not a general automation, mechanical, or electrical design position. You will develop and commission ABB robot programs for assigned stations within an automated assembly cell, working within the client's existing ABB RobotStudio programming architecture and templates, and integrating robot operation with an Allen-Bradley Studio 5000 PLC environment (a DINT-based state machine architecture covering machine initialization, station sequencing, logic bits, output OTEs, and alarms) via structured handshaking and I/O.
A separate Senior Controls PLC Engineer resource owns PLC ladder logic programming under the client's dual-engineer staffing model. This position's core responsibility is ABB robotics and robot controls solid robot/PLC integration knowledge is required to interface cleanly with that PLC logic, but you will not own full PLC program development.
You will be expected to operate with a high degree of independence: interpreting an engineering package, making sound implementation decisions within the client's programming framework, flagging technical risks proactively, and delivering production-quality, well-documented robot programs that another engineer could pick up and understand.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop complete ABB robot programs for assigned robotic stations using ABB RobotStudio, within the client's established Hudson's ABB robot programming template.
- Develop the robot sequences, logic, and motion required to execute assigned automated assembly operations.
- Configure and implement robot I/O and robot-side interface logic.
- Develop and implement the robot/PLC interface, including handshaking, status signals (ready/busy/fault), and station sequencing coordination with the Allen-Bradley PLC.
- Work directly from client-provided electrical schematics and mechanical CAD to inform and validate robot programming.
- Follow the client's established robot programming standards, templates, and coding style consistently across assigned scope.
- Review completed robot functionality against project and proposal requirements.
- Identify, document, and communicate technical risks or issues affecting the robotics scope.
- Participate in project reviews and provide regular engineering status updates.
- Resolve technical review comments and revise programs accordingly.
- Deliver completed robot program exports and supporting documentation describing program function and intended operation.
Programming Standards & Client-Provided Engineering Package All programming under this engagement is developed within the client's existing programming architecture rather than an engineer's personal conventions. The client will provide the following as the governing inputs for the assigned scope:
- Proposal package establishing the technical basis and scope of the design effort
- Robot programming standards and the established ABB robot programming template
- PLC programming standards and template (for reference/interface purposes, where relevant to integration)
- Electrical schematics for the machine and its controls
- Mechanical CAD of the machine
- Structured review feedback during project reviews
You are expected to develop robot programs strictly within this provided framework — matching structure, sequencing conventions, commenting practices, and documentation style — and to respond to review feedback with revisions that remain compliant with the template rather than introducing a divergent approach.

Required Technical Competencies
ABB Robotics (Must Have)
- Proven hands-on experience programming ABB industrial robots in production/automated machinery environments
- Strong working proficiency in ABB RobotStudio
- Experience developing complete robotic station programs, including sequencing and I/O
- Ability to troubleshoot and debug robot programs independently
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics and use mechanical CAD as an engineering reference
- Demonstrated ability to work within an established client programming template/standard rather than a personal or ad hoc coding style
- Ability to work independently from a defined engineering package with minimal oversight
Robot/PLC Integration (Must Have)
- Working familiarity with the Allen-Bradley/Studio 5000 controls environment sufficient to interface robot programs with PLC logic
- Experience with robot-to-PLC handshaking, digital I/O, robot status signals (ready/busy/fault), start/stop/reset interfaces, and station sequencing/interlocks
- Understanding of coordinating robot operation within a larger automated machine sequence
Industrial Automation (Preferred)
- Experience working on systems involving servo-driven motion, VFD-driven equipment, conveyors/indexers, pneumatic actuation, discrete and IO-Link sensing, and Ethernet-connected devices
- Experience with automated assembly machinery in a manufacturing environment
- Experience working within safety-interlocked guarding systems (E-stops, safety door sensors)
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Senior-level industrial robotics engineer with a track record of owning robotic station programming independently on production automation projects
- Comfortable being handed an engineering package (proposal, schematics, CAD) and a client's existing programming template, and producing compliant, production-ready robot code without close supervision
- Strong communicator who can surface technical risks early, explain robot logic decisions clearly in review, and turn around requested revisions promptly
- Has supported or collaborated closely with PLC engineers on multi-discipline controls projects, even if PLC programming itself was not owned by them

Preferred Experience
- Prior experience as a Senior Controls Robot Engineer or equivalent senior-level robotics programming role
- Experience adapting to and maintaining consistency within an existing client programming architecture, including structured, well-commented, and maintainable code
- Comfort responding to formal engineering review cycles and resolving review comments in a documented, traceable manner

Scope Boundaries This role is scoped specifically to ABB robot programming and robot/PLC integration. The following are explicitly outside the scope of this position:
