Position Overview
We are looking for an experienced and safety-conscious Sand Blaster / Blaster Painter to join our production and repair yard in Kochi. In this role, you will be responsible for surface preparation via abrasive blasting and applying marine-grade protective coatings to ship hulls, cargo holds, tanks, and structural steel.
Key Responsibilities
Surface Preparation & Blasting:
- Clean, descale, and prepare steel surfaces, ship hulls, decks, and marine components using abrasive sand/grit/copper-slag blasting. The Great Lakes Group
- Remove rust, mill scale, existing damaged coatings, and contaminants to achieve required surface cleanliness standards .
- Safely operate blasting pots, high-pressure compressors, nozzles, moisture separators, and blast hoses. Talents by Vaia.
Painting & Coating Application:
- Apply protective marine primers, anti-fouling paints, epoxies, and polyurethane coatings using airless spray guns, conventional spray systems, rollers, and brushes. Teal
- Accurately mix two-component paints, activators, and thinners in accordance with manufacturer technical data sheets (TDS) and pot-life limits.
- Ensure uniform film thickness, regularly checking Wet Film Thickness (WFT) to achieve required Dry Film Thickness (DFT) without runs, sags, or overspray. Teal
Quality & Equipment Maintenance:
- Perform pre-blasting and post-blasting inspections of steel profiles.
- Clean, flush, and maintain spray pumps,
blast nozzles, lines, filters, and safety deadman switches after every shift.
- Report equipment breakdowns, air pressure drops, or coating inconsistencies immediately to the yard supervisor. Teal
Safety & Yard Compliance:
- Strictly adhere to shipyard safety protocols, including working at heights (scaffolding/cradles) and inside confined spaces (double-bottom tanks, void spaces). Talents by Vaia
- Wear all mandated personal protective equipment (air-fed blasting hoods, breathing respirators, safety harness, ear defenders, coveralls). Teal
- Comply with waste disposal procedures for spent abrasive media and hazardous paint residues.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience as a Sand Blaster and Spray Painter, with direct background in shipyards, marine repair docks, offshore structures, or heavy industrial fabrication.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in handling high-pressure airless spray painting units (Graco, Wiwa, or similar).
- Sound knowledge of abrasive blasting grades, abrasive media handling, and surface roughness profiles.
- Familiarity with marine coating systems (anti-corrosive epoxies, coal tar epoxies, marine enamels).
Physical Capabilities:
- Fit to work in outdoor coastal environments, high heat/humidity, elevated scaffolding, and enclosed vessel spaces. Talents by Vaia
- Medically cleared to wear positive-pressure blasting respirators and heavy PPE. Teal
