Hirely is recruiting Malayalam language experts for a remote document annotation and transcription project focused on improving AI understanding of Malayalam documents.

The project creates training data from real, publicly available PDF pages. Each task involves producing a complete structural map of the page alongside a faithful transcription of every text region in the original Malayalam script.

The project focuses on challenging document types, including handwriting, dense multi-column layouts, tables, diagrams, and mixed-script pages. Documents may include newspapers, textbooks, examinations, flyers, forms, manuals, menus, brochures, notices, and worksheets.

What You'll Do

- Review provided PDF pages and confirm they are in Malayalam, legible, contain real content, and do not include personal details.
- Identify and bound every meaningful region of the page, including titles, headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, figures, diagrams, captions, formulas, questions, and answer fields.
- Assign each region the appropriate component type and reading-order index.
- Link regions to the relevant figure or table using parent component identifiers.
- Transcribe all text exactly as it appears in Malayalam script, including handwritten content.
- Flag regions where the source is not legible.
- Capture page metadata such as language, document type, source, page dimensions, and indicators for tables, formulas, and handwriting.
- Review the work of other Malayalam annotators as a second expert reviewer.

Who You Are

- Professional-level Malayalam proficiency with full command of Malayalam script, diacritics, and conjunct forms.
- Experience working with documents through annotation, transcription, translation, localization, subtitling, proofreading,



journalism, or regional-language data review.
- Robust character-level accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to consistently apply a structured taxonomy across large numbers of pages.
- Comfortable working with unfamiliar layouts, including multi-column newspapers, examination papers, and handwritten forms.

Nice-to-Have Specialties

- Regional-language AI data annotation, labeling, grading, or bilingual evaluation.
- Transcription, localization, MTPE, subtitling, bilingual QA, OCR correction, or post-editing.
- Malayalam document typesetting, copy-editing, proofreading, or digitization.
- Experience with Unicode normalization, Malayalam input methods, and accurate numeral and character forms.

What Success Looks Like

- Every meaningful region is captured, correctly bounded, and correctly typed.
- Reading order accurately reflects how the page is read, including across columns.
- Transcriptions match the source character for character in Malayalam script.
- Tasks pass second-expert review successfully.
- Unsuitable or illegible pages are identified and flagged early.

Contract Details

- Fully remote hourly contract.
