India

Are you a creative graphic designer who knows how to make a news story jump off the page?

We are looking for a talented Graphic Designer with excellent Adobe InDesign skills and a strong eye for newspaper and editorial design.

We are not looking for someone whose experience is limited to posters, flyers and social media graphics. We need a designer who understands how to take a news story and tell it visually, using powerful headlines, photographs, typography, pull quotes, statistics and creative layouts to make readers stop and read.

You don't necessarily need to have worked for a newspaper before. But you do need to demonstrate that you understand editorial layout, visual hierarchy and how great design can make journalism more compelling.

If you can look at a page of copy and immediately start thinking, “What's the headline? What's the strongest image? What's the element I can pull out? How do I make someone want to read this?” – we'd like to hear from you.

What we're looking for

You must be confident using Adobe InDesign and be able to take news copy, photographs and other editorial material and turn them into professionally designed newspaper pages.

We don't simply want someone who can place text into columns.

A strong newspaper designer understands that the design is part of the storytelling.

You should know how to:

- Create strong, visually engaging newspaper page layouts in Adobe InDesign
- Establish a clear hierarchy between the lead story, secondary stories and supporting content
- Make important headlines command attention without making every story compete for space
- Use photographs creatively and understand when an image deserves prominence
- Use typography, headlines, standfirsts, pull quotes, panels, fact boxes and other devices to bring stories to life
- Turn a particularly strong quote,

statistic or element of a story into a visual feature
- Design powerful front pages and section openers
- Work confidently with multi-column newspaper layouts and grids
- Understand balance, white space, pacing and visual hierarchy
- Make longer stories attractive and accessible rather than presenting readers with large blocks of text
- Recognise the difference between designing breaking news, politics, crime, community stories, human-interest features, sport and entertainment
- Maintain consistency with an established newspaper house style
- Work accurately and efficiently to publishing deadlines

The creative element

We want someone who looks beyond the copy supplied and asks:

What is the strongest part of this story, and how can the page design help tell it?

If there is a powerful photograph, make it work.

If there is a brilliant quote, bring it out.

If there is a striking statistic, find a way of making the reader notice it.

If the story deserves a dramatic headline treatment, understand how to give it impact.

And equally, know when a story needs a restrained, sensitive approach rather than dramatic treatment.

Our pages should feel like they have been designed by someone who understands news, not simply assembled from a template.

Essential skills

Applicants should have

Robust Adobe InDesign skills – essential

Experience designing newspaper, magazine or other editorial layouts

Excellent understanding of typography and visual hierarchy

Good image selection,

cropping and placement skills An understanding of print design and preparing pages for publication The ability to work quickly and accurately to deadlines
