Hirely is recruiting experienced C Software Engineers on behalf of a hiring partner to help build datasets that teach AI agents to reason about real-world software codebases.

This project focuses on difficult codebase exploration and reasoning tasks involving foundational C systems. You’ll investigate large, unfamiliar repositories, understand how their subsystems behave at runtime, and create challenging engineering questions that require genuine system-level investigation.

The work may involve major open-source C codebases such as PostgreSQL, Redis, Git, OpenSSH, OpenSSL, curl, libuv, libgit2, libarchive, Open vSwitch, tcpdump, tmux, and zstd .

Key Responsibilities

- Select tasks from a pre-validated pool of C repositories pinned to specific Git commits.
- Explore repositories and understand the relevant subsystem, including PR or issue history.
- Rewrite engineering questions to challenge advanced coding agents while remaining well-defined and answerable.
- Adjust rubrics and foils to reward correct reasoning and reject plausible but incorrect answers.
- Run the complete validation process in the project platform and iterate until tasks pass all validation stages.
- Document completed work in task READMEs.
- Address reviewer feedback and resubmit returned tasks when necessary.

Ideal Qualifications

- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience with substantial production C experience.
- Ability to navigate large, unfamiliar C codebases and explain how systems behave at runtime.
- Comfortable working with:
- Preprocessor-heavy builds




- Platform conditionals
- Manual memory management
- Autotools, CMake, or Meson build systems
- Experience with databases, cryptography, networking protocols, or systems programming is highly relevant.
- Ability to use debuggers, sanitizers, tracing tools, and profilers to establish actual runtime behavior.
- Robust written English and the ability to write precise technical questions and evaluation rubrics.
