: Software Development Engineer 2 — Backend

What You Will Do

- Own features end to end — data model, business rules, API contract, background jobs, migrations, testing and rollout.

- Take problems from the construction domain to production alongside product managers, not after them.

- Design APIs for web and mobile clients you do not control: versioning, pagination, validation and backward compatibility.

- Make technical design decisions and document the constraints, trade-offs and failure modes behind them.

- Own what you ship in production — monitoring, alerts, debugging and the fix when a job stalls mid-approval.

- Build systems that handle real-world failure: retries, timeouts, partial failures, duplicate requests and inconsistent external dependencies.

- Work across backend and AI systems, deciding when a problem needs deterministic business logic, retrieval, an LLM or an agent.

- Use AI coding tools as leverage. Claude and Codex write a lot of the first draft here you are accountable for what lands.

What We Need From You

- 3 years minimum of production Python work that real customers depended on. Django, FastAPI or both.

- Strong software design fundamentals.

You apply SOLID and clean architecture in practice: transport, business rules and persistence stay separated, dependencies point inward, and domain code does not know which framework it is running under.

- Test-driven development. You write the test first when that is the faster route, and your tests describe behaviour rather than implementation.

- Technical design ownership. You can take an ambiguous requirement,

identify constraints and trade-offs, design the system and drive it through implementation.

- Judgment on service boundaries. You can argue for a modular monolith over microservices, and explain what would have to change for the answer to flip.

- Data models you can defend. You read the query plan before the ORM trick, and you have indexed a table that was already large and busy.

- Migrations under load. You understand schema changes against live data, including locks, backfills, rollbacks and running old and new versions of code simultaneously.

- Idempotency and retries. A job that runs twice here can move stock or money. You design accordingly.

- LLM systems built like software, not demos.

Experience building agent systems using LangGraph, LangChain or equivalent abstractions, retrieval over a vector store, and integrations with more than one model provider.

- Agent infrastructure. You understand context and memory management, summarisation/compaction for long-running conversations, structured tool calling, argument validation, retries and graceful behaviour when a tool fails or a model returns nonsense.

- RAG you have taken past the demo. You have worked with chunking, embeddings, retrieval and context assembly, and have measured retrieval quality rather than assuming it works.

- Evaluation-driven AI development. You can build datasets and evaluation harnesses for retrieval and agent behaviour, compare model or prompt changes, and detect regressions before they reach production.

- Production AI judgment. You understand that LLM output is probabilistic and know where to introduce validation, deterministic business rules, fallbacks or human approval.

- Shipping hygiene. Git, Docker and CI/CD you keep green, and review comments that are specific enough to act on.

- Root-cause debugging. You can go from a trace or production symptom to the actual cause, and leave behind a regression test.

- Mentorship. You improve the engineers around you through design reviews,

code reviews and technical guidance.

- A bachelor''s degree in computer science, or the shipped work that stands in for one.

BONUS POINTS

- Evaluation and observability for non-deterministic systems.

- Natural-language interfaces over structured data.

- Multi-modal input handled as a first-class data problem.

- Vector stores in production — pgvector, Pinecone or Weaviate.

- AWS or Azure at the level of failure modes, reliability and cost, not just deploys.

- Enough JavaScript and CSS to debug across the boundary with the frontend team.

- Security practices and SOC 2 controls.

- Multi-tenant SaaS at enterprise scale.

- Domain exposure to construction, ERP, procurement or fintech.

- Performance work on large datasets.

- Experience building systems that combine structured business data with unstructured documents.

What We Offer

- Competitive compensation.

- High ownership in a YC-backed company, working on systems the whole product runs on.

- Range in one role — backend architecture, LLM systems, cloud infrastructure and system design.

- The opportunity to build production AI systems that operate on real construction workflows and business data.

- Mentorship from engineering leaders and a culture that values shipping over slideware.

- The opportunity to shape the architecture as RDash scales.
