Anesthesia & OT Technician

Job Summary The Anesthesia & OT Technician is responsible for preparing and maintaining the operation theatre, assisting anesthesiologists during the administration of anesthesia, ensuring the availability and functionality of anesthesia equipment, and supporting surgeons and the surgical team during operative procedures. The technician plays a vital role in maintaining patient safety, infection control, and efficient OT operations.
Key ResponsibilitiesAnesthesia Support
- Prepare anesthesia workstations before surgical procedures.
- Check anesthesia machines, ventilators, monitors, suction units, and gas supply to ensure proper functioning.
- Prepare and arrange anesthesia drugs, airway equipment, and emergency medications as directed by the anesthesiologist.
- Assist in induction, maintenance, and recovery from anesthesia.
- Support airway management by preparing endotracheal tubes, laryngeal masks, laryngoscopes, and related equipment.
- Assist with intubation, extubation, and patient positioning under the supervision of the anesthesiologist.
- Monitor and report equipment malfunctions immediately.
Operation Theatre Responsibilities
- Prepare the OT before each surgical procedure according to the scheduled case.
- Arrange surgical instruments, sterile supplies, implants, and consumables.
- Assist surgeons and nurses during surgical procedures as required.
- Ensure proper functioning of OT equipment, including electrosurgical units, suction machines, operating tables, lights, and patient monitors.
- Assist in transferring patients safely to and from the operating theatre.
- Support emergency and trauma surgeries as required.
Equipment Maintenance
- Perform daily operational checks of anesthesia and OT equipment.
- Maintain inventory of anesthesia supplies, surgical consumables, and equipment.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance and repairs with the biomedical engineering department.
- Ensure oxygen cylinders, medical gas pipelines, and backup systems are available and functional.
Infection Prevention & Safety
- Follow sterilization and disinfection protocols.
- Maintain aseptic techniques during all procedures.
- Ensure compliance with infection prevention and biomedical waste management guidelines.
- Follow OT safety protocols, fire safety procedures, and emergency response guidelines.
- Report safety incidents, equipment failures, and near misses promptly.
Documentation
- Maintain OT and anesthesia equipment checklists.
- Record equipment maintenance logs and inventory records.
- Document usage of consumables and anesthesia supplies as required.
- Assist in maintaining patient-related documentation according to hospital policy.
Inventory Management
- Monitor stock levels of anesthesia drugs, disposables, and OT supplies.
- Ensure timely replenishment of consumables.
- Assist in periodic stock verification and inventory audits.
- Prevent wastage and ensure proper storage of equipment and supplies.
Emergency Responsibilities
- Assist in emergency surgeries and resuscitation procedures.
- Prepare crash carts, defibrillators, emergency airway equipment, and resuscitation medications.
- Support the clinical team during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and emergency interventions.
Quality & Compliance
- Comply with hospital policies, NABH standards, and infection control protocols.
- Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives and audits.
- Attend mandatory training programs, mock drills, and continuing education sessions.
Qualifications
- Diploma or Bachelor's Degree in Operation Theatre Technology (OTT),
Anesthesia Technology, or Operation Theatre & Anesthesia Technology from a recognized institution.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is preferred.
Experience
- 1–3 years of experience in an operation theatre or anesthesiology department is preferred.
- Fresh graduates with relevant clinical training may also be considered.

- Familiarity with OT instruments and surgical procedures.

- Exposure to surgical procedures, anesthetic gases, and emergency situations while following appropriate safety protocols.
