Job Summary
Bloomingdale International School is seeking an enthusiastic, skilled, and passionate Western Dance Teacher to inspire students and develop their interest and abilities in dance.
The ideal candidate should be able to simplify dance techniques and movements, deliver engaging and interactive lessons, and create a positive learning workplace that encourages creativity, confidence, discipline, and artistic expression.
The teacher will be responsible for teaching various Western dance styles, developing students’ performance skills, and contributing to school events, performances, and co-curricular activities.
Key Responsibilities
Dance Instruction & Learning
Plan and deliver engaging Western Dance lessons appropriate to students’ age, ability, and learning levels.
Simplify complex dance steps and techniques to make learning accessible and enjoyable.
Teach fundamental dance techniques, movements, rhythm, coordination, flexibility, and performance skills.
Provide instruction in appropriate Western dance styles such as Contemporary, Jazz, Ballet, Hip-Hop, and other relevant styles.
Use interactive and activity-based teaching methodologies to maintain student engagement.
Encourage students to develop confidence, creativity, discipline, and a passion for dance.
Choreography & Performances
Create and teach choreographies for school events, assemblies, celebrations, competitions, and cultural programmes.
Prepare students for stage performances and other school-level events.
Develop age-appropriate routines that promote teamwork, creativity, and artistic expression.
Coordinate rehearsals and ensure students are adequately prepared for performances.
Student Development
Identify and nurture students’ individual talents and interests in dance.
Encourage students to explore creativity, self-expression, and different forms of movement.
Monitor student participation and progress and provide constructive feedback.
Foster a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
Collaboration & School Activities
Collaborate with teachers and academic teams to integrate dance into interdisciplinary and co-curricular activities.
Participate actively in school events, celebrations, competitions, and performances.
Support the development of dance clubs, workshops, and extracurricular programmes.
Maintain effective communication with school leadership and relevant coordinators.
Classroom Management & Safety
Maintain a disciplined, respectful, and encouraging classroom environment.
Ensure appropriate warm-up and cool-down activities to support student safety.
Follow appropriate safety practices during dance instruction, rehearsals, and performances.
Ensure students use the available dance space and equipment responsibly.
Professional Development
Stay updated with current Western dance techniques, styles, choreography, and teaching methodologies.
Participate in professional development programmes and workshops.
Attend relevant IB training and professional learning opportunities as required.
Continuously improve teaching practices to enhance student learning and engagement.
Qualifications & Skills
Essential
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Dance, Dance Education, Performing Arts, or a related field.
Formal training in Western dance and proficiency in multiple dance styles.
Strong knowledge of dance techniques, choreography, rhythm, movement, and performance.
Proven experience teaching dance to children or school-aged students.
Ability to simplify complex dance movements and techniques for learners.
Strong classroom management and student engagement skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Passion for dance education and student development.
Preferred
Experience in Contemporary, Jazz, Ballet, Hip-Hop, or other Western dance forms.
Experience working in an international or IB school environment.
Understanding of student-centred and inquiry-based approaches to learning.
Experience preparing students for performances, competitions, and cultural events.
Experience Requirements
Minimum 2 years of teaching experience in dance or performing arts is preferred.
At least 2 years of teaching experience within IB programmes is preferred.
Experience working with students across different age groups will be an advantage.
Experience in choreography and organizing school performances is highly desirable.
IB Requirements
IB Category 1 Workshop certification is preferred.
Candidates who have completed an IB Category 1 workshop within the last 2 years will be given preference.
Familiarity with IB learner-centred approaches and the philosophy of holistic student development will be an advantage.
