Role Description This is a remote volunteer role for a Cyber Security Specialist supporting Outcome School’s cybersecurity pathway and broader technology ecosystem.

The Cyber Security

Specialist will help design and review curriculum content, labs, and projects related to application, network, and information security, ensuring they reflect current industry practices. Day-to-day responsibilities may include advising learners on secure coding and configuration, reviewing security-related assignments, and providing mentorship on best practices, career paths, and certifications.



The role also involves collaborating with staff and other volunteers to improve security standards for school platforms and tools, and to simulate real-world scenarios for learners through demos, workshops, or mock incident response exercises.

The position offers versatile scheduling but expects consistent engagement and clear communication with the Outcome School team.

Qualifications

- Strong foundation in Cybersecurity and Information Security, with the ability to explain core concepts to early-career learners.
- Experience with Application Security practices, such as secure coding, code reviews, and vulnerability identification in software systems.
- Knowledge of Network Security, including firewalls, VPNs, intrusion detection/prevention, and network monitoring techniques.
- Understanding of broader Cyber domains, such as threat modeling, incident response, and risk management.
- Previous experience in a security-focused role (engineering, analyst, consultant, or similar) is highly beneficial.
- Ability to communicate complex technical topics in clear, accessible language and provide constructive feedback.
- Interest in mentoring underserved and minority learners, with a commitment to inclusive, non-discriminatory practices.
- Familiarity with common security tools and frameworks (e.g., OWASP, NIST, CIS Controls) and awareness of current threat landscapes.
