Summary

UST is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer. to support the design and development of Special Purpose Machines (SPM), material handling systems, and automation equipment. The resource will be responsible for delivering mechanical engineering solutions from concept development through detailed design, release, prototype validation, and manufacturing support.

- Develop mechanical concepts for SPMs, handling mechanisms, fixtures, automation assemblies, and precision motion systems based on defined functional requirements.
- Perform engineering calculations, trade-off studies, and feasibility assessments related to load capacity, stiffness, motion control, accuracy, and performance.
- Create and maintain 3D CAD models, assemblies, and manufacturing-ready 2D drawings in accordance with applicable industry standards and engineering practices.
- Define GD&T; requirements, tolerance stack-ups, fits, clearances, and datum structures for precision mechanical assemblies.
- Select, size, and integrate mechanical components including linear motion systems, ball screws, actuators, bearings, gearboxes, pneumatic devices, and drive mechanisms.
- Support product data management activities, including BOM creation and maintenance, engineering change orders (ECOs), revision control, and documentation management within Teamcenter PLM.
- Support prototype builds, assembly activities, troubleshooting, design validation, and issue resolution during machine development and implementation phases.
- Collaborate with manufacturing teams and suppliers on manufacturability reviews, fabrication requirements, cost optimization, and Design for Manufacturing/Assembly (DFM/DFA) initiatives.
- Participate in design reviews and technical discussions; prepare and maintain design documentation, risk assessments, validation reports, and root cause analyses.
- Work cross-functionally with engineering, manufacturing, quality, sourcing, and supplier teams to ensure successful project execution and delivery.

Required Qualifications

- Provide resources with a minimum of 5-10 years of experience in:
- Special Purpose Machine (SPM) design.
- Material handling automation systems.




- Pick-and-place systems, conveyors, transfer mechanisms, robotic handling solutions, End-of-Arm Tooling (EOAT), and precision motion assemblies.

- Ensure the resource possesses:

- Robust knowledge of GD&T; and tolerance stack-up analysis.
- Expertise in Autodesk Inventor for complex assemblies, parametric modeling, and drawing generation.
- Hands-on experience with Teamcenter PLM for CAD data management, BOM management, and engineering change control.
- Strong understanding of machine elements, materials, manufacturing processes, machining, sheet metal design, weldments, and surface treatments.
- Ability to evaluate and develop multiple design concepts and recommend optimal solutions based on technical, cost, and schedule considerations.

Execution Responsibilities

- Deliver engineering services in accordance with customer-defined design standards, engineering processes, and quality requirements.
- Maintain accurate documentation and revision control within the approved PLM system.
- Support project milestones and engineering deliverables within agreed schedules.
- Participate in technical reviews, project meetings, and collaboration activities with global stakeholders.
- Proactively identify technical risks, design concerns, and manufacturing constraints, and recommend mitigation actions.
- Support issue resolution during prototype, build, integration, and validation phases.
- Work collaboratively with internal teams and external suppliers to ensure timely completion of engineering deliverables.

Preferred Experience Preference will be given to resources with experience in:

- Semiconductor capital equipment.
- High-precision automation equipment.
- Vacuum systems design.




- Cleanroom and contamination-controlled environments.

- Engineering deliverables are completed per approved requirements and project schedules.
- CAD models, drawings, and documentation meet required quality standards.
- Design reviews are completed with acceptable closure of actions.
- Prototype and validation activities are supported successfully.
- Deliverables are released through the approved Teamcenter change management process without major quality defects.
