Job Description:
HEAD – SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT
Key Responsibilities
1. Supply Chain Planning & Strategy
- Develop and execute monthly, quarterly and annual Supply Chain Plans aligned with sales forecasts, market demand, production requirements and overall business objectives.
- Lead and oversee the end-to-end Supply Chain Management function across SML/Sumil units, covering Material Planning, Stores, Warehousing, Logistics, Import–Export, Inventory Management, GST/Tax coordination and related SCM activities.
- Translate business and customer requirements into effective supply, inventory and logistics strategies.
- Develop robust supply-chain processes to improve service levels, cost efficiency, inventory optimisation and operational reliability.
2. Cross-Functional Coordination
- Coordinate closely with Sales & Marketing, Production, Purchase, Finance, QA/QC, EHS and other functional departments to understand customer requirements, seasonal demand, production priorities and business-critical materials.
- Ensure effective communication and alignment between demand, production, procurement, inventory and dispatch functions.
- Coordinate with management and relevant departments during supply-chain disruptions and emergencies.
3. Material Planning & Availability
- Prepare, implement and monitor Material Requirement Plans (MRP), production plans and supply schedules considering:
- Demand forecasts
- Inventory levels
- Production capacity
- Material lead times
- Supplier availability
- Working-capital requirements
- Ensure timely availability of raw materials, packing materials, consumables and other critical inputs to prevent production stoppages, customer-service failures and avoidable production losses.
- Establish early-warning mechanisms for potential material shortages and supply disruptions.
- Monitor critical materials and develop contingency plans for supply risks.
4. Inventory Management
- Establish effective inventory planning and control systems to maintain optimum inventory levels.
- Reduce excess, obsolete and slow-moving inventory while preventing stock-outs.
- Monitor inventory ageing, consumption patterns, safety stocks, reorder levels and working-capital impact.
- Drive continuous improvement in inventory turnover and inventory carrying cost.
- Ensure proper reconciliation between physical inventory, system records and financial records.
5. Stores & Warehouse Management
- Provide strategic direction and operational oversight to Stores and Warehousing functions.
- Ensure effective processes for:
- Material receipt and inspection coordination
- Identification and segregation
- Proper storage and preservation
- FIFO/FEFO implementation wherever applicable
- Stock control and reconciliation
- Material traceability
- Periodic physical stock verification
- Ensure optimum warehouse space utilisation and proper storage practices.
- Maintain high standards of safety, housekeeping, 5S and material traceability.
- Ensure appropriate handling and storage of chemicals and hazardous materials in accordance with applicable requirements.
6. Logistics Management
- Oversee inbound and outbound logistics operations to ensure timely and cost-effective movement of materials and finished goods.
- Plan and monitor transportation requirements, vehicle availability, freight costs and delivery schedules.
- Monitor logistics performance and identify opportunities for freight and transportation cost optimisation.
- Ensure timely delivery of customer requirements and effective resolution of logistics-related issues.
7. Import & Export Management
- Lead and monitor Import & Export activities, including:
- Shipment planning
- Export/import documentation
- CHA and freight-forwarder coordination
- Customs requirements
- Port operations
- Regulatory compliance
- Timely clearance of consignments
- Ensure smooth coordination with internal and external stakeholders for import/export shipments.
- Monitor shipment status, documentation accuracy, clearance timelines and associated costs.
8. GST, Tax & Statutory Coordination
- Ensure proper coordination with Finance/Tax teams for GST and other SCM-related statutory requirements.
- Ensure accuracy and compliance of:
- E-way bills
- E-invoicing
- GST-related documentation
- Tax-related SCM records
- Import/export documentation
- Ensure SCM processes comply with applicable statutory, regulatory, customs and transportation requirements.
9. SAP & SCM Documentation
- Ensure accuracy and timely completion of SAP transactions related to material movements, inventory, receipts, issues, transfers and dispatches.
- Monitor the accuracy of SCM documentation, stock records, logistics records and system transactions.
- Establish robust documentation and record-control systems to ensure data integrity and audit readiness.
10. SCM Performance Management
- Establish and monitor key SCM Performance Indicators (KPIs), including:
- OTIF (On-Time In-Full)
- Inventory Turnover
- Stock-out levels
- Excess/Slow-moving Inventory
- Material Availability
- Logistics Cost
- Freight Cost
- Warehouse Utilisation
- Supply Chain Efficiency
- Analyse performance trends and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Drive continuous improvement in service levels, cost, productivity and operational efficiency.
11. Compliance, IMS & Audit Management
- Ensure SCM activities comply with applicable statutory, regulatory, environmental, safety, GST, customs, transportation and chemical-handling requirements.
- Ensure compliance with applicable IMS requirements, including:
- Quality
- Environment
- Health & Safety
- Documented Management Systems
- Ensure readiness for internal, external, customer and certification audits.
- Coordinate with QA/QC, EHS and IMS teams for audit requirements.
- Ensure timely closure of audit observations and implementation of corrective actions.
- Maintain and periodically review SOPs, work instructions, records and other controlled documents.
12. Warehouse Excellence & Continuous Improvement
- Promote 5S, process discipline, standardisation and continuous improvement across Stores and Warehousing operations.
- Identify process gaps, bottlenecks and inefficiencies and implement sustainable improvement initiatives.
- Promote digitalisation, system-based controls and data-driven decision-making within SCM.
- Benchmark SCM practices and identify opportunities for productivity and cost improvement.
13. Supply Chain Risk Management
- Identify and assess supply-chain risks associated with:
- Critical raw materials
- Suppliers
- Logistics
- Inventory
- Warehousing
- Regulatory changes
- External disruptions
- Establish appropriate risk mitigation and business-continuity measures.
- Develop early-warning mechanisms for critical shortages, supplier failures and logistics disruptions.
- Coordinate with Management and relevant functions during supply-chain emergencies.
14. Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, develop and motivate the SCM team across relevant functions and locations.
- Define KRAs, KPIs and performance standards for SCM personnel.
- Conduct periodic performance reviews and provide constructive feedback.
- Identify training and development requirements and establish appropriate competency-building programs.
- Develop second-line leadership and multi-skilled SCM resources.
- Promote discipline, accountability, teamwork, ownership and continuous improvement.
- Ensure adequate manpower, competency and resource availability for Stores, Warehouse, Logistics and SCM operations.
15. Overall Objective
- Ensure a reliable, cost-effective, compliant and customer-focused supply chain that supports uninterrupted production, optimum inventory, timely customer deliveries, efficient working-capital utilisation and achievement of overall business objectives.
