Senior Technical Architect – Payment Processing & CRM Integration Platform

Position Summary
Inspirin Labs is looking for a highly experienced Senior Technical Architect to architect and lead the development of a Payment Processing Platform for a US-based debt settlement business, starting from the ground up.
The platform will integrate with an existing or parallel Debt Settlement CRM. The primary responsibility is to design and implement the complete integration layer and payment-processing ecosystem, ensuring reliable, secure, and real-time communication between the CRM, payment platform, banks, ACH processors, and other financial service providers.
This is a hands-on architect role requiring strong experience in payment systems, financial integrations, distributed systems, and enterprise architecture.
Key Responsibilities
1. Overall Architecture
- Design the complete architecture of the Payment Processing Platform from scratch.
- Define the boundary between the Debt Settlement CRM and Payment Platform.
- Establish API, event, webhook, and integration architecture.
- Define module/service boundaries, data ownership, and system responsibilities.
- Design for scalability, security, reliability, and financial transaction integrity.
1. CRM ↔ Payment Platform Integration
- Design and implement integrations for customer creation and updates.
- Design payment account and sub-account creation.
- Integrate bank account linking and payment authorization.
- Handle payment scheduling, modification, and cancellation.
- Implement ACH debit initiation and ACH credit/disbursement flows.
- Manage payment status updates, failed payment notifications, returns, reversals, refunds, and settlement updates.
- Design account balance updates, transaction history, ledger updates, and reconciliation status flows.
- Establish request/response contracts, event contracts, authentication, retries, and idempotency rules.
1. Payment Processing Architecture
- Architect the complete payment lifecycle from CRM to payment platform, bank/processor, ACH network, and back to the CRM.
- Design workflows for payment initiation, authorization, processing, pending, successful, and failed transactions.
- Handle ACH returns, reversals, refunds, settlement, reconciliation, and exceptions.
- Ensure reliable transaction state management and downstream system updates.
1. ACH / NACHA
- Design ACH processing architecture and workflows.
- Demonstrate strong understanding of NACHA file formats, transaction codes, and ACH lifecycle.
- Design ACH submission, processing, returns, and settlement flows.
- Handle ACH return codes and downstream updates.
- Design integrations with ACH processors and banks.
- Ensure transaction validation, auditability, and compliance.
1. Ledger & Financial Architecture
- Design financial data models and transaction architecture for:
- Customer accounts and sub-accounts
- Transaction ledger
- Credits and debits
- Available, pending, and settled balances
- Fees and payment allocations
- Settlement payments
- Refunds, reversals, and adjustments
- Reconciliation
- Experience designing double-entry or transaction-based financial ledgers is strongly preferred.
1. Sub-Account Architecture
- Design architecture for individual customer and sub-account management.
- Handle account creation, status, balances, funding, payments, allocations, and transaction history.
- Design restrictions, holds, reconciliation, and account closure workflows.
1. Banking & Payment Processor Integrations
- Architect a flexible integration framework for banks, ACH processors, payment processors, account verification providers, KYC/identity providers, and other financial service providers.
- Ensure new processors and providers can be added without major changes to the core platform.
1. API & Integration Architecture
- Define REST APIs, webhooks, and event-driven communication.
- Establish authentication, authorization, API versioning, and request/response standards.
- Define error handling, retries, timeout handling, idempotency, correlation IDs, transaction tracking, and audit logging.
1. Reliability & Transaction Integrity
- Design mechanisms for idempotent payment requests and duplicate prevention.
- Implement reliable transaction processing and exactly-once business processing where required.
- Design retry and recovery mechanisms, dead-letter handling, transaction state management, and partial failure handling.
- Establish timeout management, reconciliation, and disaster recovery strategies.
1. Security
- Design security controls for sensitive financial and customer information.
- Implement API security, OAuth/JWT or equivalent authentication, RBAC, encryption in transit and at rest, and secrets management.
- Ensure PII protection, tokenization where appropriate, audit trails, secure webhook validation, access controls, and secure logging.
- Experience with PCI DSS, SOC 2, GLBA, and US financial-services security requirements is highly desirable.
1. Technical Leadership
- Lead the technical architecture and development of the platform.
- Work with Business Analysts to convert requirements into technical specifications.
- Collaborate with the CRM development team to define integration contracts.
- Guide developers on implementation and conduct architecture and code reviews.
- Identify technical risks and dependencies.
- Establish coding and integration standards.
- Resolve complex technical and architectural issues.
1. Cloud & DevOps
- Design and guide cloud infrastructure and development, QA, UAT, and production environments.
- Establish CI/CD pipelines, containerization, monitoring, logging, and alerting.
- Design backup, disaster recovery, high availability, and cloud security controls.
Required Technical Skills
- 10–15+ years of software engineering experience.
- 5+ years in architecture or technical leadership roles.
- Strong experience building FinTech or payment-processing platforms.
- Strong hands-on experience with Node.js, Python, and TypeScript.
- Experience with Next.js / Nest.js is desirable.
- Solid experience with MySQL, PostgreSQL, or equivalent relational databases.
- Strong REST API and enterprise integration experience.
- Experience with event-driven architecture and webhooks.
- Strong understanding of ACH and NACHA.
- Experience with banking and payment processor integrations.
- Experience designing financial transaction and ledger systems.
- Experience with sub-account, wallet, or account architectures.
- Strong understanding of reconciliation.
- Experience with Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS, or equivalent message queues.
- Experience with Redis or equivalent caching technologies.
- Strong AWS, Azure, or GCP experience.
- Strong understanding of API security and encryption.
- Experience with Docker and CI/CD.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems and fault-tolerant architectures.
