Software Engineer II

Position Overview

The Software Engineer II is responsible to design, code, and/or configure solutions for moderate complexity Agile stories, and to create conceptual design/architecture for small scale software solutions.

What You'll Do

- Designs, codes, and/or configures solutions for moderate complexity Agile stories, with little guidance from senior software engineers - using AI-assisted development tools to accelerate implementation while independently validating all AI-generated output for correctness, security, and maintainability.
- Debugs and resolves moderate complexity software bugs or issues, working independently, and finds the real root cause and provides a fix without collateral damage - applying systematic debugging practices, including when using AI tooling to assist investigation.
- Writes automated unit and integration-level tests under own direction, including end-to-end test coverage using modern test automation frameworks.
- Designs and implements Infrastructure-as-Code (e.g., Terraform) and CI/CD pipeline changes for cloud-based (Azure) deployments with minimal guidance.
- Creates a conceptual design/architecture for small-scale software solutions with guidance from an architect or more senior software engineer.
- Provides guidance and mentoring to more junior software engineers, including on the effective and responsible use of AI-assisted development tools.
- Follows development standards and effectively demonstrates technical solutions to other software engineers in code reviews - including reviewing AI-assisted contributions with the same rigor as hand-written code.
- Assists in making source code management decisions for one or more teams.
- Performs complex source code management tasks independently.

Education and Work Experience

- Bachelor's degree, or higher education level, or its foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Computer Information Sciences, and/or related field.
- Total Work Experience: 10+ years (software development),



6 years minimum
- Leadership Experience: 2 years minimum, 4 years preferred
- Product Experience: 4 years minimum, 6 years preferred
- Domain Experience: 4 years minimum, 6 years preferred

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities, and Behaviors

- Expert in object-oriented design, Java or .NET development, relational OLTP queries, and relational database design.
- Expert in XML/XSLT document design, JavaScript/TypeScript development, HTML5 & CSS.
- Robust working knowledge of cloud infrastructure (Azure preferred), Infrastructure-as-Code tooling (Terraform), and containerization/orchestration concepts (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Expert with CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps or equivalent) and automated testing frameworks (e.g., Playwright, Pester, or similar), including diagnosing pipeline and deployment failures.
- Expert in Duck Creek Policy, Billing, Claims, Engagement (AP), or Data Insights.
- Understands how the Duck Creek Suite operates with an understanding of all the applications.
- Demonstrated, hands-on experience using AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude Code) as part of the daily development workflow, with sound independent judgment on when to trust, verify, or override AI suggestions, and able to mentor others in doing the same.
- Excels in the ability to manage deadlines, communicate in a team, and operate independently with guidance.
- Expert in how to estimate, analyze, and execute the Software Product Development Lifecycle with Agile methodology.
- Excels in Insurance domain knowledge.
