About the role:
As a Senior Geotechnical Engineer within the PT&D; business at Balfour Beatty, you will lead and deliver geotechnical and foundation design works for major projects, including overhead transmission lines, substations, utilities, and civils. You will act as a technical authority, mentor junior engineers, and ensure project delivery aligns with programme, cost, and quality requirements.
Roles and Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Project Delivery
- Lead the geotechnical design and delivery for PT&D; projects in the UK, from feasibility through detailed design, construction, and close-out.
- Provide technical oversight and review of geotechnical analyses, including foundation, slope stability, earthworks, and retaining wall design, with a focus on OHL and substation foundations.
- Develop and validate ground models, interpret complex geotechnical data, and provide expert recommendations for foundation solutions in challenging ground conditions.
- Ensure compliance with UK and international codes (Eurocodes, BS EN50341, CDM 2015) and client specifications.
- Oversee the preparation and review of technical reports, design documents, and tender submissions.
- Manage and coordinate site investigations, laboratory testing, and risk assessments, ensuring robust data collection and interpretation.
- Manage interfaces with internal teams (structural, civil, CAD) and external parties (clients, contractors, sub-consultants).
- Support the implementation of innovative engineering tools and digital solutions for design optimisation.
Mentoring & Team Development
- Mentor and coach junior engineers, fostering technical excellence and professional growth.
- Lead technical reviews, knowledge sharing, and lessons learned sessions within the team.
- Promote a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Quality, Safety & Compliance
- Champion health, safety, and environmental best practices, ensuring all activities comply with statutory and company requirements.
- Implement and monitor quality assurance and control processes across all project stages.
Basic Qualifications
- Post-graduation in Geotechnical Engineering.
- Working towards chartership (ICE or equivalent).
- Experience - 8+ years’ experience with exposure to PT&D; or similar infrastructure projects.
- Proven track record in leading geotechnical design and delivery for large-scale projects.
- Proficient in the use of software packages like Wallap, Repute, Geo5 / GeoStudio, Plaxis etc.
- Strong analytical, organisational, and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage project teams, mentor junior staff, and interface with clients and stakeholders.
- In-depth knowledge of UK geology and ground risk assessment.
- Conversant and working knowledge in Eurocodes, latest Industry Codes and Standards including statutory rules and regulations.
