Job Summary

Hands-on engineer architecting APIs and owning delivery across cloud and on-prem. As an SDE-2 at Brainstack Technologies, you will design and build backend services that power learning, governance, and citizen-facing products used at scale. You will own end-to-end delivery of REST APIs, microservices, and AI-enhanced backend features - and work closely with Brainstacks infrastructure team to deploy and operate these systems across both cloud and on-premise environments, including state data centres (SDCs).

This is a hands-on engineering role for someone who enjoys building for scale, writing clean code, and navigating the real-world constraints of public-sector and enterprise deployments.

Responsibilities

- Architect and implement REST APIs that are robust, well-documented, and easy to consume.

- Design and implement low-latency, high-availability, and performant backend applications.

- Build AI-enhanced or agent-driven backend features using tools like LangChain or CrewAI.

- Build backend services for handling data at large scale, with clean separation of concerns and adherence to SOLID principles.

- Test software to ensure responsiveness, correctness, and efficiency.

- Collaborate with front-end developers on the integration of UI elements with backend services.

- Take initiatives to build better and faster solutions to the problems of scale.

- Troubleshoot application-related issues and work with the infrastructure team to triage Major Incidents.

- Analyze and research solutions, and develop and implement recommendations accordingly.

- Install and configure software and applications on servers across cloud and on-premise environments.

- Automate and deploy applications including deployments to on-prem and state data centre (SDC) environments where applicable.

Requirements

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field.

- 3-7 years of qualified backend engineering experience.

- Expertise in JavaScript (ES6) and Node.js is a must.





- In-depth knowledge of frameworks like Express.js and Restify.

- In-depth knowledge of Node.js concepts like the event loop.

- Strong knowledge of algorithms and data structures.

- Experience in building backend services for handling data at large scale is a must.

- Ability to architect high-availability applications and servers on cloud, adhering to best practices. Microservices architecture is preferable.

- Experience working with MySQL and NoSQL databases like DynamoDB and MongoDB.

- Experience writing complex SQL queries.

- Understanding of communication using WebSockets.

- Good understanding of clean architecture and SOLID principles.

- Ability to perform technical deep-dives into code.

- Knowledge of Linux - installation of packages such as MySQL, Java, and Node.js.

- Knowledge of Linux basic commands.

- Good OS and application troubleshooting skills.

- Familiarity with Git.

- Experience with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Cursor, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate development, assist in code reviews, and support efficient coding practices is a must.

Nice to Have

- Hands-on experience deploying and managing applications on on-premise infrastructure, particularly State Data Centres (SDCs) or other government data centres.

- Experience with any virtualization platforms (VMware, KVM, Hyper-V, Nutanix) commonly used in SDCs.

- Experience with infrastructure-as-code and configuration management tools like Ansible, Terraform, or Puppet for hybrid (cloud + on-prem) environments.

- Basic knowledge of AWS and Docker containerization.

- Experience with Kubernetes or other container orchestration in on-prem clusters.

- Exposure to monitoring and observability tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, Zabbix, Nagios) for production systems.

- Knowledge of front-end frameworks like ReactJS.
