Job Summary The Physiotherapist is responsible for assessing, planning and providing physiotherapy treatment to patients with physical disabilities, injuries, pain and movement-related conditions. The role involves developing individualized treatment plans, monitoring patient progress, educating patients and coordinating with doctors and other healthcare professionals to support safe and effective rehabilitation.
Key Responsibilities
1. Patient Assessment
- Conduct comprehensive physiotherapy assessments based on the patient's condition and physician's referral.
- Assess pain, range of motion, muscle strength, mobility, balance, posture and functional limitations.
- Review relevant medical history, diagnosis and clinical reports.
- Identify appropriate physiotherapy goals in consultation with the patient and treating team.
- Document initial assessment and treatment findings accurately.
1. Treatment & Rehabilitation
- Develop individualized physiotherapy treatment plans based on patient needs.
- Provide appropriate therapeutic exercises and rehabilitation programmes.
- Perform manual therapy and other treatment techniques within professional scope of practice.
- Provide electrotherapy and other physiotherapy modalities when clinically indicated and appropriately authorized.
- Assist patients with mobility, gait training, strengthening, stretching and functional activities.
- Modify treatment plans according to patient response and progress.
- Monitor patients during treatment and identify any adverse response requiring medical attention.
1. Inpatient Physiotherapy
- Provide physiotherapy services to admitted patients as prescribed or clinically indicated.
- Conduct bedside physiotherapy for appropriate patients.
- Assist in early mobilization of post-operative and medically secure patients.
- Provide chest physiotherapy and respiratory rehabilitation when appropriately trained.
- Assist with mobility and rehabilitation of ICU and critically ill patients in coordination with the treating team.
- Educate patients and attendants regarding safe mobility and prescribed exercises.
1. Outpatient Physiotherapy
- Evaluate and treat patients attending the physiotherapy outpatient department.
- Provide rehabilitation for musculoskeletal, neurological, orthopaedic and other suitable conditions.
- Develop home exercise programmes according to individual patient requirements.
- Schedule and monitor follow-up sessions.
- Educate patients regarding posture, ergonomics, activity modification and injury prevention.
1. Post-Operative Rehabilitation
- Provide rehabilitation following orthopaedic, neurological and other surgical procedures as prescribed.
- Assist patients with safe mobilization and functional recovery.
- Provide exercises to improve strength, flexibility, balance and mobility.
- Coordinate with surgeons and treating physicians regarding patient progress and rehabilitation requirements.
1. Patient & Attender Education
- Explain treatment procedures and expected rehabilitation goals to patients and attendants.
- Educate patients on home exercises and lifestyle modifications.
- Promote adherence to prescribed physiotherapy programmes.
- Provide guidance on prevention of recurrence and improvement of functional independence.
1. Equipment & Safety
- Ensure physiotherapy equipment is used safely and appropriately.
- Conduct routine checks of treatment equipment.
- Maintain equipment in clean and functional condition.
- Report damaged or malfunctioning equipment promptly.
- Follow appropriate patient-safety measures during transfers, mobilization and treatment.
1. Infection Prevention & Control
- Follow hospital infection prevention and control policies.
- Maintain proper hand hygiene and standard precautions.
- Clean and disinfect reusable equipment and treatment surfaces appropriately.
- Follow biomedical waste management procedures wherever applicable.
- Take additional precautions for patients requiring isolation.
1. Documentation & Records
- Maintain accurate patient assessment and treatment records.
- Document treatment provided, patient response and progress.
- Maintain daily treatment and follow-up records.
- Record discharge advice and home exercise programmes where applicable.
- Ensure confidentiality and security of patient information.
1. Multidisciplinary Coordination
- Coordinate with doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, dieticians and other healthcare professionals.
- Participate in multidisciplinary discussions regarding patient rehabilitation when required.
- Communicate significant changes in patient condition to the treating physician promptly.
- Assist in developing comprehensive rehabilitation plans.
1. Quality & NABH Compliance
- Follow hospital policies, SOPs and departmental protocols.
- Maintain compliance with applicable NABH patient-safety and quality requirements.
- Participate in quality improvement activities and clinical audits.
- Maintain appropriate documentation for departmental audits.
- Participate in training, competency assessments and continuing professional development programmes.
- Report incidents and near misses through the hospital's established reporting system.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) from a recognized institution.
- Master of Physiotherapy (MPT) in a relevant specialty is an added advantage.
- Valid registration with the applicable professional/state authority, wherever required.
