Role: Senior Database Engineer

About the Job

We are looking for a hands-on Senior Database Engineer with strong experience in large-scale SQL-based data transformation and database performance optimisation.

The role will focus primarily on developing and maintaining native database transformations that convert data from multiple legacy source models into canonical data models used by cloud-based applications and microservices.

The successful candidate will work with large data volumes and will be expected to design scalable SQL transformations, stored procedures, functions, and views, while ensuring that database performance remains efficient as data volumes grow.

This role involves working closely with architects, product owners, data engineers, and other engineering teams, so strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills are important.

About You

You will have a strong background in hands-on database engineering and complex data transformation, ideally within AWS environments using PostgreSQL and/or MySQL.

You should be comfortable taking a legacy data model and designing the SQL transformation required to map it into a new canonical model across multiple tables.

You will also have strong database performance engineering skills and be comfortable analysing execution plans, identifying performance bottlenecks, designing appropriate indexing and partitioning strategies, and refactoring poorly performing SQL and database routines.

This is a database engineering and development role rather than a traditional DBA.





Key Skills & Experience

Database Transformation & Development

- Strong hands-on experience with PostgreSQL and/or MySQL, ideally Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL and Aurora MySQL.
- Expert-level SQL development skills, including complex queries, stored procedures, functions, and views.
- Proven experience developing complex native SQL transformations across multiple tables and data models.
- Experience transforming data from legacy source models into canonical or target data models.
- Proven experience designing database transformations capable of efficiently processing many millions of records.
- Strong understanding of set-based processing and designing scalable database logic for large data volumes.
- Experience designing and implementing scalable, high-performance relational database solutions.
- Solid understanding of relational data modelling and database design principles.

Performance Engineering

- Strong hands-on experience with database performance tuning and optimisation.
- Expert knowledge of analysing SQL execution plans and identifying performance bottlenecks.
- Proven experience refactoring and optimising poorly performing queries, stored procedures and database transformations.




- Strong understanding of indexing strategies, including the ability to select and implement appropriate indexes based on query and data access patterns.
- Experience implementing partitioning strategies for large datasets.
- Ability to diagnose database performance issues and identify root causes across complex SQL workloads.

Engineering & Delivery

- Experience using Git/GitHub or similar version control for database code and schema changes.
- Experience working with CI/CD processes for database deployments.
- Ability to work independently on complex technical problems while collaborating effectively with architects and other engineering teams.
- Experience working within Agile delivery teams using tools such as Jira.

Secondary Skills - Nice to Have

- Experience with AWS services such as Database Migration Service (DMS), and DynamoDB.
- Understanding Change Data Capture (CDC) and database replication patterns.
- Exposure to Azure technologies such as Azure Data Factory and Azure SQL Managed Instance.
- Experience developing scripts or automation to support database engineering and deployment activities.
- Experience with automated database testing.
- Experience working across both AWS and Azure environments.
