About the role
You will own the mechanical design of our devices and the assemblies around them: body-fitting mechanisms, enclosures for the electronics, and the fixtures and processes that make assembly and fitting repeatable. The central engineering skill is designing adjustable, compliant mechanisms that hold components against the human body with controlled force, comfortably, across the full range of human variation, and iterating those designs rapidly against real-world feedback.
This is a 3-month internship position with the potential for conversion to a full-time role upon successful completion.
What You'll Do
- Design body-fitting mechanical systems using springs, flexures, printed compliance, and quick-adjustment mechanisms that maintain controlled contact force and stay comfortable for sessions of an hour or more.
- Design enclosures and integration for the electronics, including wire routing, strain relief, connectors, and battery packaging, in close collaboration with the electronics engineer.
- Develop sizing and adjustment systems informed by anthropometric variation, so that fit is fast, repeatable across users and sessions, and comfortable.
- Take designs from in-house FDM and resin prototyping to small-batch production (SLS or MJF, silicone and TPU molding, machined components where justified) at volumes of tens to hundreds of units.
- Select skin-protected materials and define cleaning and hygiene procedures for shared-use hardware.
- Build test rigs for your own designs: contact-force measurement, wear trials,
and flex and drop durability, with documented results feeding each design revision.
What We’re Looking For
- 2+ years of mechanical design experience on products or prototype programs involving sustained skin contact: wearables, medical or sports devices, eyewear, audio, orthotics, or comparable consumer hardware.
- Demonstrated mechanism design capability, particularly compliant and adjustable mechanisms for the human body.
- Fluency in mainstream CAD (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Onshape, or similar) and extensive hands-on additive manufacturing experience, with sound judgment on when to print, mold, machine, or purchase a part.
- A rapid prototyping working style, with daily iteration on physical parts.
- Experience designing around PCBs, connectors, and cabling, with shared ownership of the assembled device.
Nice to Have
- Ergonomics or Mechanical Design background.
- Parametric or code-driven CAD (OpenSCAD, CadQuery, Grasshopper).
- Soft goods, textile, or silicone molding experience.
- Experience preparing designs for contract manufacturing.
